Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
Facilities Operations within Facilities Services includes Building Services, Grounds, Housekeeping, and the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling (
OWRR). Responsibilities include preventive and routine maintenance of building mechanical and electrical systems including
DLAM facilities and BSL3 labs; housekeeping; grounds including urban forestry, landscape installation and preventive and routine maintenance of grounds and stormwater devices; waste management and recycling services; and support of special events and adverse weather response. |
Position Summary |
The Executive Director of Facilities Operations has direct responsibility for leading a complex set of facilities management functions including building services and maintenance, landscaping and grounds maintenance, and housekeeping.
The Facilities Operations department within Facilities Services includes Building Services, Grounds Services, Housekeeping Services, and the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling (
OWRR). Responsibilities include preventive and routine maintenance of building mechanical and electrical systems, including Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (
DLAM) facilities and BSL3 labs; housekeeping; grounds, which includes urban forestry, landscape installation, and preventive and routine maintenance of grounds and stormwater devices, and support of special events and adverse weather response.
The scope of this position's responsibilities includes more than 20 million square feet located on the 750-acre main campus and three outlying areas (Carolina North, Quail Hill, and Mason Farm). The Executive Director supervises a team of directors who collectively manage a diverse team of more than 800 employees and is expected to provide exemplary executive leadership in promoting respect and civility among all members of the Facilities Operations workforce.
This is a highly visible position that interacts with senior administration within the University as well as stakeholders external to the University. The Executive Director must be able to provide presentations and represent Facilities Services in strategic engagement opportunities. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience at a senior management level in facilities operations/services within a highly complex environment that includes a wide range of facility types, sizes, and ages.
Experience with large-scale facilities management systems and data-driven decision making.
Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills, the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of constituencies, and a strong commitment to employee involvement and workplace civility are essential. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Candidates with prior experience in a research university setting with large-scale public event venues as well as wet-lab and patient care facilities are strongly preferred.
Licensed Professional Engineer or other relevant professional credential or registration.
Additional degree or advanced certification in engineering, building construction, business, management, public administration or related field.
Knowledge of AssetWorks, AiM or similar maintenance management software. |

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
