How will you CONTRIBUTE and GROW?
This position is responsible for supervising sales and use tax (SUT) and other transaction tax audits conducted by various US state and local taxing authorities on Air Liquide's NAM-US companies. The SUT Supervising Associate plays a key role in avoiding unjustified audit assessments and appealing or settling audit assessments when made by taxing authorities. In addition to SUT audit supervision, this person also has supervisory responsibilities of other selected US Transaction Tax team tasks or functions, as assigned. This role requires a seasoned SUT professional who is technically strong with experience and interpersonal skills necessary for working successfully with tax auditors and internal personnel at multiple levels of the organization.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Managing the activities of tax auditors conducting state & local sales, use, rental, gross receipts, B&O license, and similar tax audits of different Air Liquide US companies,
- Presenting and explaining to tax auditors the various business models, relevant accounting and record keeping practices as these relate to completing SUT audits in the most efficient and beneficial way possible,
- Providing records, data, and other relevant information to auditors if necessary for accurate and efficient audit completion, only after thorough analysis and review; this includes SUT research to support tax positions and/or rebut unfavorable taxability conclusions drawn by taxing authorities,
- Performing detailed analysis of audit results to validate auditor findings and to meet internal reporting requirements; and performing analysis and assessment estimates prior to audit completion for provision calculation purposes,
- Analyzing audit errors to identify areas needing corrective actions, developing specific action plans to implement the corrections, and leading on improvement execution,
- Assisting with taxability review & analysis of Air Liquide's EPC company's major capital projects and taking full charge of SUT estimating for assigned Plant Project Proposals,
- Managing assigned use tax refund projects from end-to-end, including any resulting tax refund verification audits, and recommending actions or fixes to cure whatever caused the tax overpayments,
- Fulfilling purchase-side Exemption Certificate Requests for Air Liquide's U.S. operating entities, as assigned.
Are you a MATCH?
Education & Training
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Taxation, or similar discipline required
- CMI-(Sales Tax) a plus
Experience & Capabilities
- 7+ years experience in US multi-state transaction taxation,
- Advanced knowledge of current state and local (multi-jurisdictional) sales/use tax laws, concepts, policies, regulations, and specific application of these to the manufacturing and retailing industries,
- Knowledgeable of state and local SUT audit processes & procedures, including dollar stratified statistical sampling techniques, and knowledge of the various state and local appeals/protest processes and procedures,
- Demonstrated ability to manage priorities and time-sensitive projects,
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, a must,
- Knowledge of Vertex system processes a plus,
- Proven ability working with data-files in MS Excel, above basic, is required,
- Experience working with Oracle R12 (AR & OM subsystems) a plus,
- Experience and comfortable working in a fast-paced and empowered environment.
