POSITION SUMMARY:

Our Hematology and Oncology department and the Center for Regenerative Medicine (CReM) is seeking a curious, thoughtful and motivated laboratory technician to join the lab. Our laboratory is embedded in a thriving scientific community adhering to principles of collegiality, collaboration, and open-source biology. The Lab: We study the molecular underpinnings of plasma cell disorders such as systemic immunoglobulin amyloidosis in collaboration with the world-renowned Boston University Amyloidosis Center. Specifically, we 1) generate numerous cell types from patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), 2) evaluate cell-type specific responses to stressors known to drive disease progression, and 3) develop novel biomarkers and targeted therapeutics for plasma cell disorders.

Responsibilities: The role involves managing day-to-day operations in the lab, performing experiments, and reporting results. Besides gaining organizational, managerial and research experience, you will have a unique opportunity to be involved in all aspects of starting up a lab within an existing state-of-the art infrastructure.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Cell culture: maintenance, expansion and routine mycoplasma testing of mammalian and IPS cell lines
• Accession, processing, and storage of biopsy samples for biobanking
• Differentiation of iPSCs to various cell types
• Process blood products and isolate PBMCs for downstream generation of iPS cell lines. Flow cytometric assessment of cells

• Perform standard molecular biology techniques on such as qRT-PCR, gel electrophoresis, Western blot, ELISA, immunofluorescence (IF)
• Transcriptomics, proteomics, functional assays: sample preparation, processing, and optimizing workflow
• Plan, assist and conduct research, including collection and recording of results and samples. Data analysis, presentation, and report preparation
• Help set up and maintain an efficiently operating lab (ordering, keeping logs, and inventories up to date)

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION

• Bachelor's degree required.
• College level courses in biology, chemistry, molecular biology, cell biology and/or laboratory sciences are also required.

EXPERIENCE

• Demonstrated record of accomplishment, assisting, initiating and/or completing a research project (poster presentation, scientific communication, publication)
• One year experience in a laboratory setting preferred

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

• Knowledge of safe handling procedures of hazardous materials.
• Ability to learn and integrate procedures and knowledge relating to lab protocols and techniques
• Good computer skills, including data entry and use of spreadsheet and/or database.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks as dictated by the research schedule. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques, (e.g. pipetting, use of microbalance), serial dilutions, and enthusiasm to learn new skills.
• General understanding of translational and clinical research and the federal requirements for ethical patient treatment.
