Associate Director of Development, Department of Neurology and Brain Sciences

Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week. The manager will confirm the team's core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.

The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine (FJHM) is the dedicated development and alumni relations team supporting the entities that comprise Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), including clinical departments, hospitals, satellite clinics, and the School of Medicine. We contribute to Johns Hopkins Medicine's mission of patient care, research, and education through securing philanthropy, building and maintaining donor and alumni relationships, and supporting institutional priorities. FJHM partners closely with institutional leaders, faculty, and clinicians to engage alumni, patients, donors, and prospects in JHM's work to advance medicine and improve the human condition.

The Associate Director of Development reports to the Director of Development for the Departments of Neurology and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation for the management of private sector fundraising to support research, patient care, and educational needs for the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins Medicine. The Associate Director will identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts ($100,000+) from donors, grateful patients and families, friends and occasionally foundations and corporations. This position will serve as the Chief Development Officer to the Divisions of Movement Disorders, Epilepsy, Headache and Pediatric Neurology and will work closely with Division Chiefs and faculty, along with administrators within those areas, to identify the needs of the divisions and to successfully achieve fundraising goals.

Key responsibilities:

1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Department of Neurology including the history, 14 divisions within the Department of Neurology, and the research, educational and clinical care components of the four divisions this position directly supports. Attain and maintain specialist-level ability to articulate the need for support of unrestricted funds and priority needs within these assigned areas.

2. Manage a portfolio of approximately 100 - 125 prospects and donors with the goal to personally solicit or arrange for volunteer or institutional solicitation, for major gifts to support the priority needs of the department and assigned divisions. The focus will be on gifts of at least $100,000 along with occasional annual fund contributions at the $5,000+ level.

3. Work with a group of 20-25 neurology faculty members and their care teams. Hold recurring meetings to educate faculty and staff on the grateful patient fundraising process and to encourage faculty participation in development activities; secure faculty referrals and identify and evaluate giving potential of patient prospects; coordinate faculty participation in prospect solicitations and stewardship. Keep the development team current on faculty research initiatives and funding priorities.

4. Complete 85 or more substantive touches and 75 or more meaningful prospect and donor visits (in-person or virtually) each year. Performance metrics also include benchmarks for funds raised, proposals developed and submitted, among others.

5. Organize and direct preparation of proposals, gift agreements, outreach and solicitation letters, impact reports, and other cultivation, stewardship and informational materials for prospects and donors.

6. Assist with the planning and coordination of major development events including meetings, professorship dedications, lectureships, seminars, symposiums, and donor recognition events, as needed.

7. Represent the Department of Neurology and the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine in internal and external committees, cohorts, advisory groups, and other institutional and industry groups as appropriate.

8. Participate in Neurology Department meetings, including division and faculty meetings, and weekly Neurology Grand Rounds, as well as meetings and trainings via Johns Hopkins Medicine, the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine and Development and Alumni Relations.

9. Other duties as assigned.

• Bachelor's degree.
• Three years related professional experience.
• Additional education may be substituted for years of professional experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

• Preference for candidates with experience in university and/or medical settings and with planned giving.
• Development experience including personal solicitation of individuals at the $25,000+ level with a focus on five and six figure prospects and donors and a documented record of productivity
• Demonstrated abilities as a writer and editor.
• Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills, along with a team mentality and willingness to collaborate.
• Ability to present themselves with the highest levels of professionalism at all times and to exercise good judgment, diplomacy, and discretion with diverse populations and situations.
• Experience working with broad and diverse groups of constituents such as donors, alumni, patients, friends, faculty, department directors, hospital and university administration, fundraising colleagues and/or institutional leadership preferred.
• Ability to operate a personal computer to access e-mail; a high-level of proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; and the aptitude to learn new software and technology.
• Ability to operate standard office equipment such as copier, fax machine, postage machine and scanner.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage more than one project simultaneously are required.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, attention to details and accuracy, and some basic knowledge and understanding of accounting theory and practices.
• Ability and comfort working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment that places a strong emphasis on metrics and success.
• Willingness and ability to travel, including out-of-state and regionally and to be flexible with scheduling as this position may require occasional evening and/or weekend hours.
