Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography is an academic unit within the
UNCW College of Science and Engineering. The Department offers a unique Bachelor of Science degree in Coastal Engineering and manages a dedicated teaching and research facility including a 24-meter wave flume. The Department maintains a strong commitment to teaching and providing research opportunities for undergraduate student participation in the extensive scholarly activity of its faculty.
The Department supports the College's mission by providing specialized courses in coastal physics and engineering that develop student abilities to understand and solve critical problems in the coastal zone. The mission of the B.S. Coastal Engineering Program is to provide students with knowledge of engineering principles, technological skills, and experiences needed to address critical issues affecting coastal communities in the region and around the world. Students are trained to directly enter the workforce or pursue advanced degrees by graduating with a base knowledge of wave and current processes, coastal infrastructure design, field and laboratory data collection methods, and numerical modeling. The program prepares students for a wide range of careers in local or state government, industry, or non-profit sectors. |

The College of Science and Engineering offers a variety of programs leading to Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, as well as Doctor of Philosophy degrees in applied coastal and ocean sciences; pharmaceutical chemistry; integrative, comparative, and marine biology; and psychology degrees. The college also offers combined bachelor's/master's degree programs in information technology/computer science and information systems, computer science/computer science and information systems, and B.S. in mathematics/M.S. in mathematics. To implement its academic programs, the college provides instruction and research opportunities in the natural and behavioral sciences, information technology, data science, computer science, mathematics, pre-engineering, and engineering. The eight academic departments in the college provide courses of study in each of these areas, in addition to interdepartmental programs in information technology, cybersecurity, and digital arts. A 2+2 in engineering; and 3+2 programs in computer science and electrical or computer engineering; and physics and electrical engineering, are also offered in the college. Post-baccalaureate certificate programs in environmental studies, applied statistics, and geographic information science are also available.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position |
The primary role for this position will be to support the Coastal Engineering program and provide laboratory oversight. The individual will work with internal and external partners to understand wave flume testing needs, prepare for and schedule specialized research experiments. They will also perform equipment maintenance and assist with laboratory experiments and process relevant data collected. Other responsibilities include assisting with undergraduate laboratory (wave flume, sediment lab, etc) and field courses, equipment inventory, participating in field deployments for research activities, and design and fabrication of instrument platforms as needed. They will also manage access and training for the machine shop. This position serves as the first point of contact for faculty and students when designing laboratory demonstrations or research projects that include the facility to ensure the goals are achievable based on available equipment and operational schedule. This individual may also supervise undergraduate and graduate students with laboratory preparation to ensure the proper configuration of the space and that appropriate procedures are followed. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High school and one year of directly related experience required to perform the assigned duties. |
Preferred education, professional skills and experience |
- Bachelor's or Master's degree engineering, oceanography or marine sciences and at least one year of research experience.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively in a group environment and operate as part of a team to achieve the teaching and research objectives.
- Prior experience with programming (Matlab, Python), data analysis, Microsoft Office products
- Prior experience with maintaining inventory
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
