Decatur, IL Corps

Position Title: Maintenance Technician

Job Summary: The Maintenance Technician will maintain the local Decatur properties and facilities in operating order, forecast repair needs and repair any concerns as discovered or as indicated on a repair schedule. This individual will be required to manage a wide range of repair and maintenance tasks.

Reports To: Corps Officer(s)

Qualifications: Minimum of two year's related work experience. Good written and verbal communication skills with those they interact with to include staff, volunteers, community members, those we serve and supporting organizations. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to be a team player, a self-starter, and perform with minimum supervision.

Candidates must successfully pass the pre-employment background inquiry and annual motor vehicle check with a valid driver's license and maintain DOT Certifications as required.

Candidates must have a passion for fulfilling the mission of The Salvation Army and must be articulate in presenting the same to others.

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent. Significant experience may be considered in lieu of.

  • Team player, self-starter, and perform well with minimal supervision.
  • Must have an interest and ability to work with people of diverse racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds in a sensitive and culturally appropriate manner.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience or capacity to demonstrate positive interpersonal skills and work as a cooperative team member.
  • Demonstrated awareness of budget resources and cost control.
  • Experience in using email and MS Office applications.
  • Must be able to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary. Especially in emergent situations.

Essential Responsibilities:



  • Ensure all corps properties are maintained in a clean, organized and safe manner at all times.
  • Ensure all vehicles undergo regular maintenance including, but not limited to oil changes, inspections and all necessary services.
  • Organize and maintain an active inventory of all janitorial and maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Janitorial Maintenance - ensure that all facilities are clean and that all supplies are stored, inventoried and restocked appropriately.
  • In connection with other services, Maintain the exterior of the Decatur campus buildings including the removal of trash, snow and ice, sidewalks, lawn care, door operations, external lights and fixtures, roofs, etc.
  • Develop a preventative maintenance schedule for all local properties and see that it is performed.
  • Ensure all light fixtures are operational and replace bulbs and accessories as needed. Maintain electrical systems and address any electrical needs promptly.
  • Schedule and oversee pest control and lawn care/landscaping for all local locations.
  • Set up and tear down rooms for regular and special events and meetings as needed.
  • Make general repairs and recommendations around the property that are within your expertise and arrange for repairs using contractors, following The Salvation Army policies and approval.
  • Maintain a filing system for all repair and warranty information for appliances and equipment in the facility, including vehicles.
  • Maintain the HVAC equipment in order to keep climate control in the facility functioning properly.
  • Assist as needed with pick-ups of supplies, Food Bank, Christmas equipment and toys as needed.
  • Assist with the annual Christmas Campaign by maintaining and inventorying the kettle equipment year-round.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere through appropriate conflict management, courteous demeanor, and professional and appropriate communication practices.
  • Maintain compliance in The Salvation Army's "Safe from Harm" Certification program and any related trainings.
  • Oversee volunteers and other custodial staff with the cleaning and sanitation of all areas, especially restrooms, kitchens, and meeting rooms and Chapel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned as related to facility upkeep and maintenance.



Position Ranking: Regular, Full Time, Non-Exempt.

Physical Demands/ Work Environment:

This Position is required to do light to moderate physical work. To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the individual is regularly required to be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time. Individual must be capable of frequently lifting 50 pounds, and occasionally lifting 100 pounds. Frequently lifts or moves 100 pounds or more with assistance of another person/forklift/floor jack/dolly/cart or truck. Majority of lifting is from floor to waist high. Some lifting required above waist and shoulder high, but it will be a reduced weight. Position is expected to: Bend, stoop, crouch, stand, walk, carry and push/pull items. Most of this work will be internal, warehouse or outside. Temperatures will fluctuate with the weather.
