Uses professional health education concepts. Applies campus policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues. Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.

Working within a public health framework, the Health Promotion Specialist collaborates with UCSF staff, faculty, administrators, and student leadership groups, and community agencies to advance student success by working to prevent the development of personal and campus population-level health problems while enhancing individual, group and institutional health and safety. Initiatives will be based on research, theories, and evidence informed practices. Focus areas may include Mental Health and Wellbeing; Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion + Anti-Bias/Anti-Racism (JEDI/ABAR); Sexual Health; Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug; Physical Health, and others.

The Health Promotion Specialist works within the Wellness and Health Promotion team to coordinate all health and well-being initiatives within Student Mental Health and Wellbeing (SMHW) to ensure that SMHW is serving the campus in accordance with the mission, vision and values of the department and having campus-wide impact. Working within a public health framework, the Health Promotion Specialist collaborates with UCSF staff, faculty, administrators, and students to advance student success by working to prevent the development of personal and campus population-level health problems while enhancing individual, group and institutional health and safety. Initiatives will be based on research, theories, and evidence informed practices. The Health Promotion Specialist advances the objectives of each initiative effectively and comprehensively and formulates multifaceted strategies to address emerging campus health needs.
The Health Promotion Specialist reports to the Wellness and Health Promotion Director. All procedures, programs, resources, and budget expenditures should be determined in collaboration with the supervisor. The Health Promotion Specialist is expected to comply with all university policies and procedures and provide a safe and welcoming environment to all UCSF students.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $61,200 - $87,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The mission of Student Mental Health and Wellbeing (SMHW) is to optimize the mental health and wellbeing of students to help them achieve academic success, personal development, and lifelong wellness. SMHW offers mental health counseling and psychiatry services, health education and promotion, health insurance support services, immunizations, and local oversight of the UC Student Health Insurance Plan.

Wellness and Health Promotion utilizes a global, holistic view of health and wellbeing to support the wellness of person, place, and planet with particular focus on the prevention and early intervention portions of the wellbeing spectrum.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum of 1 year of directly related experience
  • 1 or more years' experience of developing, managing, implementing and evaluating health and wellness services programs
  • Working knowledge of the health promotion and education field.
  • Skills associated with both the development and delivery of health education programs and services.
  • Working knowledge of the design and delivery of related programs.
  • Effective interpersonal skills needed to work with a diverse client group to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with administration, staff, visitors and volunteers, using tact, diplomacy and good judgment during all interactions in the performance of a wide variety of programs
  • Ability to acquire the requisite skills to analyze, interpret and respond to client needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to develop curricula, training materials, press releases, etc., and convey them to a diverse audience
  • Analytical and program evaluation skills to effectively provide sound recommendations, continually examine systems, and develop or revise to accommodate change requirements
  • Customer service skills to represent information and programs to faculty, staff, students, and the public
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to advancing Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity/ Anti-bias anti-racism principles
  • Possess a working understanding of a public health approach to primary care, mental health, and student wellness
  • Be attuned to current needs and shifts in higher education wellness and strategies to develop and support timely and responsive initiatives

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience working with faculty, staff and students in a university setting or university health setting
  • Demonstrated experience within health promoting campuses/higher education environments and/or Okanagan Charter
  • Decision-making skills to independently and effectively analyze situations and provide reasoned recommendations and fair and equitable decision-making
  • Collaboration skills to develop short- and long-range planning and program goals, to analyze and evaluate programmatic needs and recommend changes for effective operation
  • Knowledge of current evidence-informed strategies and theories to change health behaviors and reduce risks
  • Knowledge of social and macro environmental and policy influences on health behavior
  • Experience with traditional and state-of-the art strategies of health promotion, education, behavior change, environmental management and evaluation
  • Familiarity with Health Information Portability and Accountability (HIPAA) Act
  • CHES or MCHES certified, or eligible for CHES or MCHES certification within one year from date of hire and / or equivalent experience / training
