Exercise physiologist- Fridays 7am-4:30pm

Job Summary :

To provide care that is patient and family centered in both inpatient and outpatient environments that exemplifies best practice, fosters relationship based care and maintains the integrity of professional exercise physiologist standards and nursing standards. Practice care guidelines are based on the ANA code of ethics, professional code of conduct and standards from American Society of Exercise Physiologists, and regulatory agency standards by which the exercise physiologists provides care in collaboration with the RN and/or RT.

Must be available every Friday 7-4:30

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Will, under the order of or supervision of a physician, perform the duties of non-invasive cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures after completion of training and competency evaluation in each procedure: ECG, rhythm strip, heart monitor hook-up, treadmill stress test, nuclear stress test, stress ECHO tests, and DOB echo and nuclear test
  • Will record short cardiopulmonary history on patients through the asking of questions relevant to testing or procedure to be performed.
  • Will maintain departmental statistical and individual productivity records.
  • Will act as part of the cardiac fast teams for inpatient units
  • Will use common sense and special medical skills with regard to patient age, diagnosis and physical abilities.
  • Will edit ECG and stress testing reports as established by policy.
  • Will directly interact with the patient and physician in receipt, review, scanning and reporting of event recorders.
  • Will promote an environment that focuses on patient safety.
  • Will follow Departmental, Hospital and Human Resources Policy & Procedures.

1. Fiscal

a. Uses time productively and supplies and equipment judiciously.

b. Supports leadership and implementation of scheduling and supply change to provide quality, cost effective care.

c. Provides accurate, timely documentation for patient charges.

d. Charts and documents initial and daily assessment data in participant records.

e. Assess patient's pre, during, and post exercise making appropriate referrals and/or recommendations to participant and other staff.

2. Quality

a. Interacts as a team player and participates in continuous quality improvement activities, data gathering, and change process within the organization.

b. Participates in the initial assessment and orientation of new participants; assists in the development of the individualized plan of care with other staff members.

c. Contributes expertise as a member of a multidisciplinary team to offer comprehensive treatment strategies to provide positive outcomes for individual participants and for the programs offered.

d. Demonstrates the interpersonal and observational skills needed to effectively identify appropriate psychosocial adaption to illness and/or the presence of psychopathology (e.g., depression, anger, etc.).

e. Participates in the collection, analysis and reporting of identified individual patient and program outcomes.

3. Patient Satisfaction

a. Takes steps to improve patient satisfaction with care, assisting the RN to develop strategies to improve patient/significant other/family satisfaction.

b. Understands and utilizes contemporary theories of health behavior change in helping participants identify learning and lifestyle modification goals.

c. Assess patient's risk factors that are modifiable and demonstrates ability to offer support and strategies to aid patient in therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC).

d. Demonstrates use of relationship based care model.

4. Patient Safety

a. Supervises exercise session, monitoring participants for inappropriate responses to exercise.

b. Effectively applies knowledge of exercise science to a population with cardiovascular and pulmonary disease and other potential conditions.

c. Develops and adjusts individual exercise prescription in 6 minute walk, daily patient response in rehab, and physician recommendations on a regular basis.

d. Immediately reports any new, changing and/or significant conditions.

e. Applies safety principles in provision of patient care and follows safety, fire, hazardous waste disposal and emergency response plans.

5. Professional Growth

a. Identifies own limitations and seeks assistance when needed and demonstrates a willingness to strive toward proficiency in the core competencies.

b. Participates in department/unit development initiatives.

c. Shares knowledge and skills with colleagues and others and serves as content or skill expert.

d. Completes new hire orientation and ongoing mandatory education.

e. Identifies professional needs and collaborates with management for learning opportunities in for self and others.

f. Performs follow up on recognized needs and correction plans.

6. Customer Service

a. Exemplifies excellent guest relations to patients, visitors, physicians and co- workers.

b.Provide a professional and quiet patient environment, be flexible with assignments, staffing needs and assigned shifts.

c. Practice AIDET (Acknowledge, Identify, Duration, Explanation, Thank You).

d. Promote commitment to co-workers, view all staff as part of an equal team and be approachable at all times, and maintain interdepartmental relationships.

e. Provide holistic care for diverse patient populations.

Education and Experience Required:

1. Bachelor's degree in health related field or Exercise Science.

2. A minimum of one year of cardiology experience preferred if degree in health related field.

3. Area specific required education may be obtained upon hire and is to be maintained, e.g., ACLS, BLS, etc.

Licensure Preferred:

ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (EP-C)
ASEP Board Certified Exercise Physiologist (EPC)
