The Position

The Port of Portland is hiring a Risk Management Intern !

Your Role: As a Risk Management Intern at the Port of Portland, you will be an integral part of the team dedicated to safeguarding the intricate web of operations that make the Port a dynamic and secure hub. In this role, you will delve into the world of risk assessments, working collaboratively with seasoned professionals to identify potential hazards, and develop strategies for mitigation.

To be considered for this intern position you must be a current student enrolled in an Oregon/Vancouver, WA area school for the duration of employment. Spring 2025 graduates will not be eligible for this internship unless documentation of continued educational classes (graduate school related to the field) can be provided at the time of application.

Duration: This Internship will have a time duration of 12 weeks working 30-40 hours a week.

Essential Job Duties

  • Participate in the development of the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) foundation and framework.
  • Assist with the Workers' Compensation, Liability and Property claims administration activities by learning how to facilitate claim recovery strategies, how claims are reported and provide follow-up claims information to insurers and brokers.
  • Assist the various business functions with the identification and assessments of risks.
  • Assist with the creation of a business continuity management plan.
  • Learn to support the various business units in the development of risk mitigation strategies and implementation of chosen strategies.
  • Learn how to develop new risk metrics to monitor risks and the effectiveness of controls.
  • Aid in the administration of the insurance program portfolio, including the tracking of third-party certificates of insurance.
  • Participate in the investigation and administration of property damage and injury claims.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Oregon/Washington college or university and seeking a degree in business administration, emergency management, risk management, or a related business studies field.
  • Student must also provide current unofficial transcript at time of application.
  • Maintenance of a minimum 2.7 grade point average and continued enrollment in classes pertinent to the internship is required. 3.0 GPA or higher is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of current Microsoft Office Suite applications is helpful.
  • Agree to submit a final written evaluation to the Internship Committee within 4 weeks of the internship completion.

  • Skilled at research and analyzing relevant factors, draw logical conclusions, and make
    recommendations based on findings.

Supplemental and Selection Information

SELECTION PROCESS (tentative schedule):

  1. A minimum qualification evaluation of education, training, and experience of submitted application packets will take place by Human Resources the week of February 2, 2025.

  2. A Subject Matter Expert (SME) Panel will perform an evaluation of experience and training taken from your employment application materials including any responses to the supplemental questionnaire.

  3. Our goal is to schedule oral panel interviews with candidates that successfully passed the SME evaluation step approximately the week of February 17, 2025. The successful candidate will be notified after interviews are complete, with a tentative start date in June 2025.
