I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Demonstrates basic knowledge of medical terminology.
2. Demonstrates the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient's age, cultural background and spoken language.
3. Demonstrates knowledge and practice of interpreters' boundaries
4. Interprets patients' and providers' comments accurately and documents appropriately.
5. Explains cultural differences or practices to health care providers and patients when appropriate and communicates any patient special needs to providers.
6. Participates in the training and education of staff on cultural and linguistic aspects.
7. Works with colleagues to address patient/family concerns about hospital services and to insure patient satisfaction.
8. Compiles and maintains data for internal and external purposes.
9. Actively participates in performance improvement process, projects and teams.
10. Abides by the Interpreter Code of Ethics.
11. Pursues opportunities to participate in new experiences.

Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:
1. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
5. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
6. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

All responsibilities are essential job functions.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. High school graduate or equivalency.
2. Must complete a medical interpreter program.
3. Must pass competency assessment test prior to hire as indicated.
4. ASL Interpreter must be certified.

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Fluency in written/spoken English language
2. Strong interpersonal communication skills necessary to interact with very sick patients, their families and staff under stressful/emergency situations.

Preferred:
1. Prior experience as a medical interpreter

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
