Emergency Room based pharmacist

Works every other weekend

Our ER pharmacists work closely with members of the healthcare team (physicians, pharmacists, nurses, paramedics, pharmacy technicians, patients and families, others) to provide and coordinate comprehensive pharmaceutical services for patients. ER pharmacists are based in the Emergency Room and provide coverage for our other hospital patients as well.

Activities include (but not limited to): medication order review and verification, patient home medication histories and reconciliation, patient education, medication therapy recommendations to practitioners, attendance at Emergency Response (Code Blue/MET calls/Code Pink), pharmacokinetic medication dosing, medication therapy management, and medication preparation/distribution.

Opportunities for participation in clinical initiatives such as medication treatment and dosing guidelines, disease state treatment protocols, and experiential education for college of pharmacy students also exist.

BLS and ACLS training/certification will be done through the Unity Point Health education department (if not already certified).


Overview

Functions as a Pharmacist as defined by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners. Responsible for providing all aspects of pharmaceutical care, including clinical and distributive tasks, for patients served within our health system. Acts as a member of the health care team to help patients and clinic staff achieve clinical outcomes and monitor progress toward common goals. Performs assignments and projects as directed by the Pharmacy Management Team. Supervises Pharmacy technicians in the absence of formal departmental leadership.

Qualifications

Education: B.S. Pharmacy with equivalent clinical experience. * Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) preferred, * Completion of an ASHP accredited PGY-1 pharmacy residency desirable

Experience: Proficiency in navigating the electronic medical record. * One or more years of hospital pharmacy experience preferred

License(s)/Certification(s): Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons. Iowa Pharmacist license in good standing or eligible for licensure. Must attain a license to practice Pharmacy in Iowa within six months of employment. Must be directly supervised by a licensed pharmacist until Iowa Pharmacist license is obtained. Must maintain current license to practice pharmacy in Iowa and be in good standing with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiner
