I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Interviews prospective candidates for positions in the laboratory and makes recommendation to Manager.
2. Evaluates new hires performance and conducts performance reviews on employees assigned.
3. Schedules employees for various lab benches and shifts; reviews all work performed in area to ensure completeness and quality and takes corrective action as necessary.
4. Discusses performance issues with employees and recommends disciplinary action to Manager.
5. Follows established protocols to perform an all kinds of tests, including the most complex for an assigned area. Provides guidance and consultation to Medical Technologist I's and Medical Lab. Technicians in the interpretation of highly complex or unusual test results.
6. Interprets and correlates clinical test results with patient history, diagnosis, and clinical condition to explain test results (normal/abnormal) so that appropriate action can be taken.
7. Troubleshoots testing process discrepancies.
8. Develops new test and quality procedures for assigned area.
9. Ensures that test results meet requirements of the laboratory quality control program.
10. Ensures preventative maintenance for equipment in assigned area. Performs complex troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex equipment and instrumentation.
11. May assist in the roll-out of new equipment and equipment modifications.
12. Instructs technicians and technologists in the set-up and operation of new equipment and procedures.
13. Ensures compliance with all laboratory quality and safety policies.
14. Instructs students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures.
15. Maintains accurate records of tests performed, using computer-based systems.

Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:

1. Distributes and monitors the flow of work for an assigned group of employees. Provides training and technical assistance to employees within the assigned work area. Assists supervisor in assuring that assigned employees are provided with appropriate resources, materials, and methods. Provides recommendations to manager or supervisor for the most efficient utilization of assigned personnel. Relays work instruction from the supervisor.
2. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
3. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
4. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed.
5. Demonstrates use of quality improvement in daily operations.
6. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
7. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
8. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Bachelor's degree or successful completion of an accredited four-year school of Medical Technology.

Preferred:
1. ASCP certification as an MT is preferred.

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Five years of related experience with demonstrated leadership skills.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements, will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a laboratory environment.
