GENERAL NATURE OF POSITION

Act as mate on the research vessels John H. Martin and Sheila B. Assist with the operation and maintenance of small boats and motors, operate and maintain shared use scientific equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Act as mate aboard the research vessels John H. Martin and Sheila B. vessels.
  2. Assist the captain with the safe and efficient operation of the vessels. Ensure the effective completion of oceanographic sampling needs of the scientists; responsible for the deployment of scientific equipment over the side of the vessel and managing activities on deck while underway.
  3. Assist with maintaining the hull, deck machinery, interior, electronic components and power plant of research vessels during normal operations and shipyard periods.
  4. Stands watch opposite the captain on extended trips and may act as a relief captain when necessary.
  5. Assist the marine equipment technicians in maintaining an inventory of shared use equipment available for use on board the R/V John H. Martin other vessels.
  6. Coordinate the use of shared scientific equipment with investigators before cruises, ensuring it's available, ready, and onboard. Oversee its cleaning and storage after cruises, and address any repair, replacement, or calibration needs.
  7. Make recommendations concerning the purchase of new equipment, improvements to existing equipment and changes in procedure. Provide information necessary for the preparation of budgets and proposals.
  8. Assist with the maintenance, repair and overhaul of equipment and machinery associated with the vessels, including outboard motors and vessel hulls.


INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS

  1. Reports to the marine operations manager and work lead by small boats coordinator.
  2. Interacts daily with the captain of the R/V John H. Martin and/or Sheila B. vessels, in regards to repairs, maintenance, alterations or modifications of equipment on the ships.
  3. Interacts with the marine technicians in regards to repairs, coordination of shared-use equipment and the need to order spare parts, supplies and replacements.
  4. Interacts with outside contractors in arrangements for repairs, constructing equipment, and the purchase of equipment, spare parts, and engineering.
  5. Interacts with graduate students and other scientists to insure safe and effective use of equipment and vessels, and completion of scientific sampling needs.

None.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Minimum two years of experience as marine technician, outboard mechanic, mate or captain, or equivalent combination of education and experience relating to ships and their equipment.
  • A USCG mates or captains license is desirable but not required.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Excellent communication and listening skills required.
  • Knowledge of basic seamanship. Must not be incapacitated by seasickness.
  • Knowledge of the different types of oceanographic, geological and biological equipment used on board oceanographic research vessels.
  • Knowledge of marine epoxy paint systems and fiberglass repair is desirable.


Physical Demands

  • Work takes place in a shop environment or onboard research vessels or small boats. In port the normal working hours are 8 to 5, thirty-two hours per week.
  • This job involves spending considerable time working at sea. Sea days are generally long days, up to 10 hours or more. Conditions at sea include exposure to all types of weather, rough seas, cold temperatures and violent motion of the vessel.
  • Machines and equipment used: Drill Presses, grinders, sanders, buffers/polishers, band saws, scroll saws, table saws, compressors, sandblasting equip., measuring instruments, hand powered saws, drivers, planers, drills and assorted hand tools, material handling equipment, cranes, winches, forklifts, hoists, come-alongs, blocks, tackle, vehicles, etc.
