Sleep Technologist Trainee

Position Highlights:

Position: Sleep Technologist Trainee

  • Hourly Pay Range: $23.24 - $34.86. The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.
  • Location: 800 W Central Rd. Arlington Heights, IL.
  • Full Time: 40 hours/week
  • Hours: Monday-Friday, Nights, 6pm - 6:30am

General Summary:

Reporting to the Sleep Center Manager and in conjunction with the Sleep Center leadership physicians and while under the direct supervision of the Charge Technologist or CCSH Technologist performs and accurately scores adult and pediatric diagnostic and therapeutic sleep testing procedures including diagnostic sleep studies, oral appliance studies, split night and full night therapeutic titration of CPAP, BiLevel, auto servo ventilation positive airway pressure and oral appliance and oxygen therapy. Performs mask and positive airway pressure equipment fittings and accurate and thorough patient/family education for testing procedures being performed. Works under the Charge Technologist or CCSH Technologist who guides the non-registered Sleep Technologist in the use of sound clinical judgment and follows policy and procedure and physician order and instruction to provide patient care. Accurately scores physiological data and generates data and technician summary reports as verified by the Charge Technologist or CCSH Technologist for each patient case to the physician. Participates in all quality assurance and improvement measures and processes. Adheres to and exemplifies NCH CARES values and standards at all times.

Phase I begins upon hire and lasts 3 months.

Phase II begins after successfully completing Phase I and lasts 3 months.

Phase III begins after successfully completing Phase II and lasts 3 - 6 months.

After successfully completing Phase III the trainee technician successfully passes the AASM ASTEP Testing Modules OR graduates from a qualifying Sleep Technologist college course. Once ASTEP certified OR graduated, the trainee moves into the Registered Sleep Technologist job role and has 24 months to take and pass the RPGST exam.

What you will need:

  • Is a currently enrolled 1st or 2nd year Sleep Technology Student at an accredited college or university with at least one completed full semester of clinical rotation with hands on patient experience, OR is hired as a sleep technologist trainee, AND
  • Works under the direct supervision of and trained by the PRECEPTOR Technician to accomplish all phases of the training process, AND
  • Is Basic Cardiac Life Support certified as a Healthcare Provider within 2 weeks of hire, AND
  • Is able to perform all aspects of the Sleep Technologist job role independently by the end of the Phase III training period timeline within this document as evidence by passing all AASM ASTEP testing modules and PRECEPTOR Technician sign off for all current AAST ASTEP Technologist job role clinical competencies.
  • Performs ongoing education in the field of sleep medicine at a rate of 10 continuing education units annually as defined by the AASM for technologist in an accredited sleep program: must additionally meet all AAST, BRPT, and AASM educational requirements, AND
  • By end of Phase III training period timeline has knowledge and understanding of indications, contraindications, and adverse effects of nasal continuous, bi-level, and auto servo ventilation positive airway pressure, oral appliance and oxygen administration, AND
  • Failure to comply with these standards will result in removal from employment.
