Position Description

The Dean of Education in the College of Education at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, tenured Professor to begin in Summer/Fall 2025. The successful candidate will be an innovative, dynamic, collaborative, and entrepreneurial Dean of the College of Education, providing intellectual and strategic leadership for teaching, research, service, and outreach and engagement endeavors in the College of Education.

Among other duties, the Dean will manage departmental personnel; administer the academic programs with the assistance of program directors; develop and sustain connections with related professional and industry entities to promote teaching, research, development, and outreach; effectively represent the department to internal and external entities; effectively manage the unit's budget to sustain a culture of fiscal responsibility and health; and promote the success of the faculty, staff, and students in the department. The Dean will also serve as a departmental faculty member with the following expectations related to teaching and research. The Dean reports to the Provost and works closely with the President and other senior officers to implement the University Strategic Plan. Specific responsibilities of the Dean include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing the college's strategic plan
  • Advising the Office of the Provost on teacher certification requirements for the State of Texas
  • Managing national and regional accreditation processes
  • Providing leadership and innovation in teaching, research, and service - including fostering relationships with the community and with state and national educational agencies
  • Effectively representing the College in the broader university community, alumni relations, fund raising, and in state, federal, and private sector academic and research issues
  • Managing graduate and undergraduate enrollment
  • Effectively managing the college's human, financial, and physical resources
  • Leading the College in a manner that supports the University's R1 status, while articulating in a supportive way the expectations this development brings for faculty and their scholarship
  • Being an advocate for every academic program in the college

Major/Essential Functions

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Oversight of all academic programs.
  • Oversight of student recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Oversight of all aspects of College governance.
  • Hiring faculty and staff, management of personnel, and oversight of all review processes.
  • Management of the college budget.
  • Oversight of strategic planning and implementation.
  • Directing external relations, including developing community relationships and ties with alumni.
  • Leading fundraising activities.
  • Implementation of all University and state procedures and policies.
  • Representing the College to University senior administration.
The successful candidate for the Dean of the College of Education position will be an experienced and empathetic leader who has expertise in maintaining and strengthening internal and external relationships with individuals and constituencies in support of the College while also handling multiple University priorities.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic planning and a shared vision through open dialogue and transparency
  • Experience with shared governance and seeking input from the College's faculty and staff in academic and resources decisions
  • Demonstrated experience in successful enrollment management and growth
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to articulate and promote the mission of the College to internal and external constituents
  • Substantial administrative experience in fiscal and personnel management in higher education
  • Previous successful fundraising record and a willingness to engage in development activities
  • Experience in obtaining and administering local, regional, state or federal grants
  • A demonstrated entrepreneurial and innovative record of supporting academic and research initiatives
  • Evidence of supporting in-person, blended, distance and online learning environments
  • A demonstrated record of supporting faculty and staff in their professional careers
  • Experience building partnerships with campus, state, federal, and private entities and the educational community
  • Proven record of advocacy for community economic development programs, community outreach or engaged scholarship
