Job Description
Spectrum Healthcare Resources has a potential opportunity for a civilian Medical Physicist at the VA Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. Requirements include:
Degree: Master's or Doctoral degree in physics, medical physics, biophysics, radiological physics, medical health physics, or equivalent discipline from an accredited college or university accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs, Inc (CAMPEP).
- Certification: Board eligible or board certified in diagnostic medical physics or nuclear medical physics or therapeutic medical physics from the American Board of Radiology of medical health physics from the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP).
- Experience: One year of experience within the last two years as a Medical Physicist.
- Current BLS certification.
Core Duties include but not limited to:
- Maintain calibration of all treatment machines and radiation sources according to accepted protocols.
- Provide clinical expertise with regards to the purchase of new radiation therapy treatment related equipment and upgrades of existing equipment.
- Provide clinical expertise for acceptance testing, commissioning, calibration, and periodic quality assurance of radiation therapy equipment.
- Measure and analyze beam data for the treatment machines and assure that beam and source data are correctly entered into the treatment planning system and that beam data is tabulated in a form that is usable by the radiation therapists, dosimetrists, and radiation oncologists.
- Work with other members of the treatment planning team to establish treatment planning and delivery procedures.
- Perform and direct the determination of radiation dose distributions for patients undergoing treatment. Ensure accuracy of the plans, dosimetry calculations, dose totals, and their documentation in patient's charts. This includes 3-Dimensional conformal radiotherapy planning and delivery.
- Ensure the function and the operation of the following technologies: Virtual Wedge, Electronic Portal Imaging Devices (EPID), Digital Reconstructed Radiographs, Virtual Simulation, and Multileaf Collimation, Tomotherapy, Stereotactic Radiation therapy and High Dose Rate Brachytherapy.
- Meet radiation monitoring, quality assurance, and safety requirements to ensure compliance with licensure requirements, hospital radiation safety regulations, and national standards of performance.
- Perform a quality assurance check after maintenance of the treatment machines in accordance with regulations and standard operating procedures.
- Provide education and training for dosimetrists, radiation therapists, nurses, and technical staff.
- Provide input to the Department head or government supervisor on the development and maintenance of quality assurance procedures within the division.
- Perform or clinically oversee all radiation monitoring, quality assurance, and safety requirements to ensure compliance with licensure requirements, hospital radiation safety regulations, and national standards of performance.
- Assist in simulations and treatment planning when needed.
- Assist in brachytherapy procedures.
- Attend all scheduled weekly chart rounds, quality impact, and quarterly Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) meetings as directed.
- Assist with Local Area Network Servers and data management systems.
- Perform other duties consistent within the labor category assigned by the Department Head, Chief Physicist, and Medical Director.
- Maintain calibration of all radiation oncology equipment.
- May provide input to Assistant Department Head and government supervisor in defining specifications for purchase of new radiation oncology equipment and upgrades to existing radiation oncology equipment.
- May provide input to government supervisor in performing acceptance testing, commissioning, calibration, and QA on radiation oncology equipment.
- Ensure function and operation of current technology used in radiation oncology such as linear accelerators, CT-Simulator, superficial X-ray unit, dosimetry equipment, computers, and network devices, etc.
