This position has the option of working a hybrid or remote schedule. The hybrid schedule would be a combination of working both onsite at Campus and remote. Candidates must have the ability to coordinate/participate in calls outside of normal working hours/multiple time zones, as needed, due to international collaborations.

DESCRIPTION

Within the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego, the Center on Gender Equity and Health (GEH) focuses on conducting innovative global public health research, medical and academic training, and evidence-based intervention development and evaluation of programs related to gender inequities, gender-based violence, and sexual and reproductive health (adolescent and unintended pregnancy, family planning, HIV/STI, healthy birth spacing). The team of social science and epidemiology researchers assembled by GEH includes leading figures in measurement and rigorous evaluation of sustainable programs working with girls, young women, their male partners and their families to understand and change gender-based behaviors and social norms that compromise health and safety. GEH currently has ongoing research in South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and the United States. This research is supported by a diverse portfolio of public and private funders, conducted in conjunction with international NGOs, and includes engagement with local and national governments.

Reporting to the Project Director/GEH-Co-Executive Director, the Strategic Communications Manager will guide strategy and implementation of communications and knowledge management for the USAID-funded Agency for All project, and other GEH initiatives as time permits. The Communications Manager will lead teams in developing and implementing GEH and project brand and identity, within overall UCSD guidelines, and foster dissemination and utilization of research and practice-based evidence to support goals. The Communications Manager will work with Agency for All and other project teams to develop and execute communication and knowledge management products. The Strategic Communications Manager will collaborate and partner with the School of Medicine's Office of Communications to identify opportunities to highlight Agency for All's work across the broader institution. They will also work in coordination with the Office of Communications on all issues management, press releases and media requests.

The Strategic Communications Manager independently oversees a comprehensive communications program for a unit or school with a large, complex communications program requiring a wide variety of communications media, including written, visual, digital and electronic, and associated technical applications. Works with management to develop and execute organizational communication and market branding strategy for a highly visible program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Nine years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor's degree in related area plus five years of related experience/training.

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of technical applications to direct professional technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.

  • Advanced knowledge of the organization, including its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure; strong knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education and / or health sciences.

  • Advanced skills to create, develop, and implement long and short term strategic communication plans.

  • Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.

  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.

  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, project management, and problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution skills.

  • Thorough knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.

  • Ability and interest in taking information and translating it into digestible messaging for a broad array of stakeholders including researchers, program implementers and policy makers and funders and delivering it effectively.

  • Complex communications generalist skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Experience working within USAID and Foundation systems, specifically Bill & Melinda Gates.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $94,400 - $176,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $45.21 - $84.67

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
