JOB TITLE:

Research Scientist, Asst - Veterinary Science Biosafety and Biocontainment Manager

JOB PURPOSE:

The position serves as Biosafety/Biocontainment Manager within the Department of Veterinary Sciences and Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory (WSVL), working with the UW Biosafety Officer, UWBF Scientific Director, WSVL Director, and Departmental Head in developing, implementing and managing a comprehensive Biosafety program, including training, record keeping, and operations in support of the UW Biocontainment Facility (UWBF). This position is critical to the safe and effective operation of the UW Biocontainment Facility, which serves as a resource for research and diagnostics on some of the most significant infectious diseases affecting animal and humans in this region. Operations of the UWBF are highly regulated by the Centers for Disease Control and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services-USDA under the Federal Select Agent Program (FSAP).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Primary duties are to the biosafety program and Select Agent Program that include maintaining detailed records of Select Agent related activities, laboratory-based physical inventory of select agent material, transfer of select agents and performing duties in relation to the FSAP Bio-suitability program.
  • Ability to obtain FSAP Tier 1 approval within one year of employment start date.
  • Ability to enter the UWBF following entry and exit SOP including showering out, and perform physical duties related to maintain safe and efficient operation of the facility.
  • Develop and monitor Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to maintain the facility's biological containment, annual facility shutdown/maintenance, training, and building security.
  • Produce and provide biosafety and biosecurity related safety training (including drills and exercises)
  • Perform facility reviews and inspections
  • Advising management and staff on biosafety and biosecurity matters.
  • Serves as primary point of contact and liaison with maintenance and service providers to maintain critical building systems and equipment essential for safe operations, including security systems.
  • Monitor and operate autoclaves, effluent decontamination system, and carcass disposal system.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

Depending on candidate background and interest there may be opportunities to participate in ongoing research-related to operations within the UWBF.

  • Technical/Professional Knowledge: Able to operate and train others in the operation of biosafety-related equipment and procedures to include use of respiratory protection, autoclaves, vaporized-hydrogen peroxide and chlorine dioxide systems, and gas incinerators.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelors of Science degree in Biology or closely related field
  • Master's degree obtained before start date
  • At least 2 years of experience working in a BSL3 laboratory
  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Candidates that are registered biocontainment professionals or have practical research experience at BSL3 or higher levels of containment are preferred
  • Experience working with large and/or small animals
  • Experience supervising a staff member
  • Current or previous security risk assessment and federal select agent program approval are a plus.
