About the Position

The Flood Control District is looking for a motivated individual to assist in developing and advancing public programs within our department! If this is you, consider applying to our Community Rating System (CRS) Coordinator position!

The (CRS) Coordinator plays a vital role in the Flood Control District by managing and enhancing the district's participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining programs and activities that reduce flood risk, thereby improving the district's CRS rating. A higher CRS rating leads to reduced flood insurance premiums for residents within the district.

We Require

  • One year of public relations and/or public outreach experience

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, public administration, or a closely related field

  • A combination of post-secondary education and/or experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis

We Also Value

  • Prior CRS Experience

  • Project management experience in a state or federal program (including reporting, monitoring, and auditing)

Job Contributions

  • Attend meetings and community events in support of the CRS Program; compile program statistics and reports for delivery to FEMA, state, and community partners; communicate program status and advocate for the CRS program with multiple County departments, state and federal agencies, and municipalities

  • Coordinate program communications and lobby Maricopa County interests with FEMA and its consultants

  • Act as an advocate for government relations and present project issues at public meetings and board meetings; communicate program issues to internal and external stakeholders

  • Represent Maricopa County at external agency workshops and board meetings; and act as Maricopa County's representative at state and regional planning groups for the CRS program

  • Act as the primary public contact and liaison for the District-dependent communities and coordinate community outreach to assist with state and federal requirements as they relate to the CRS program

  • Prepare analyses and communicate impacts of development code changes, capital projects, CRS outreach activities, engineering studies, and floodplain map changes

  • Develop and enhance policies and floodplain management programs through collaboration, research/data collection, public involvement, and coordinating efforts with multiple branches/divisions/municipalities

  • Provide support and direction to staff with respect to compliance with FEMA programs

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed both in-person and remotely

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire

  • Requires travel to and from job-related locations during a scheduled workday, subject to County policies regarding the use of County vehicles and/or private vehicles used on County business

  • Ability to exert up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly OR requires walking or standing to a significant degree
