Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, REPRESENTED PROJECT ___ (E.G., SCIENTIST) SERIES FISCAL YEAR. A reasonable estimate for this position is $72,000 - $82,100.

Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start:
As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.
Position duration:
Initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description

Professor Adina Paytan in the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applicants for an assistant project scientist to be stationed at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs (LBNL). The Paytan Biogeochemistry Lab is dedicated to exploring the intricate web of interactions between living organisms and the chemical elements that shape our planet.

Under the direction of Dr. Adina Paytan at UCSC and Dr. Zelalem Mekonnen at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), the assistant project scientist will utilize machine learning models to investigate how different coastal wetland restoration options and climate change will affect wetland carbon balance. The selected candidate will be working on modeling gas carbon sequestration in coastal wetlands as a nature based decarbonization solution and using model outputs to create a GIS tool useful for upscaling and decision making.

Duties will include numerical modeling, parameter optimization for ODEs, utilizing CNN and LSTM methods to assess carbon sequestration potential and greenhouse gas emissions and GIS. The position will require the scientist to use MATlab, Python, C++, Linux, Openmp, and MPI; demonstrate familiarity with wetland carbon dynamics, and consistently demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Applicants with experience using machine learning applications to process eddy covariance tower data are highly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted)

  • A Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in applied mathematics, or a related field (e.g., geology/earth science, environmental science, computational and applied mathematics, etc.) .
  • Demonstrated experience with modeling gas carbon sequestration in coastal wetlands.
  • Demonstrated record of experience with machine learning models.
