WVU DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE

The Chief Resident in Internal Medicine is a unique position that allows a physician to develop a leadership role and introduces him/her to academic medicine. Although technically a faculty position in the Department, the Chief Resident functions as an integral link between faculty and house staff, and therefore must maintain good communication channels with both groups. The position allows for the development of administrative skills. The position allows for the development of teaching skills in Internal Medicine. Because of the flexibility of this position, the Chief Resident is allowed to grow in many ways, and may choose to pursue independent scientific investigation or to devote more time to clinical medicine. Above all, the Chief Resident should be a role model for house officers and medical students.
REQUIREMENTS
1) Completion of accredited residency training program in Internal Medicine, combined programs in Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, or Internal Medicine/Behavioral Medicine or other ABIM recognized combined programs.
2) American Board of Internal Medicine certified or eligible.
3) Academic excellence as judged by performance and possibly awards for teaching.
4) Ability to interact with people and possess leadership qualities.
5) Must obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine in West Virginia
6) Obtain and maintain full and unrestricted privileges at WVUH
APPOINTMENT
An appointment at the Instructor level (Non-tenure Clinical Track) in the School of Medicine is granted. The position is for a one-year term only. The Chief Resident's immediate supervisor is the Program Director.
DUTIES OF THE CHIEF RESIDENT
Duties fall primarily into six categories: administrative, teaching, service, recruitment, research
and miscellaneous. Duties include but are not limited to:
I. Administrative Duties
Schedules
1) Participate in the new resident orientation.
2) Develop a yearly schedule (month by month) for each resident in the department.
Assume compliance with RRC guidelines. Notify appropriate individuals when
changes are made throughout the year.
3) Schedule residents from other departments taking rotations in the Department of
Medicine. Educate them as they begin the rotation on their responsibilities and advise
them of the standards for the Department of Medicine.
4) Coordinate the faculty physician schedule on the inpatient general ward services with
the Chairman of Medicine, and the Section Chief of General Internal Medicine.
5) Develop monthly call schedule, and work with the Program Managers to upload the
call schedule into the online Call System.
6) Coordinate the Medicine Sub-internship Rotations for MS IV's in collaboration with
the Office of Student Affairs and the director of Sub-Is in the Department of
Medicine.
7) Conduct orientation of new Department of Medicine residents at the beginning of
each month.
8) Organize and Chair the monthly Housestaff Meeting in conjunction with the Program
Director.
Conferences
1) Moderate Grand Rounds in coordination with the departmental Conference
Committee.
2) Schedule Residents' Noon Conference in coordination with the Program Mangers.
3) Organize as your primary responsibility the Afternoon Report conferences. The
Chief Resident must assume a major teaching role for this conference.
4) Conduct a monthly Morbidity and Mortality Conference.
5) Collaborate with the Department of Pathology to present Autopsy Conference
twice yearly.
6) Monitor house staff attendance at required departmental conferences.
Committee Participation
1) As a vital link between faculty and house staff, the Chief Resident will serve an
integral role on various departmental committees. He/she will be a member of the
Medical Student Committee, the residency CCC, residency PEC, and Medicine
Quality Committee.
2) As a member of the medical staff at Ruby Memorial Hospital, the Chief Resident
will serve on a number of hospital committees as assigned by the Chief of Staff.
Disciplinary Matters
1) The Chief Resident will handle day to day minor house staff disciplinary matters.
Problems requiring more attention will be brought to the Program Director and/or
Chairman.
2) The Chief Resident will play a major role in the surveillance of house staff
performance.
II. Teaching Duties
1) Primary responsibility for teaching at Morning Report.
2) Preceptor for MS II physical diagnosis students.
3) Facilitator for MS1/MS2 Clinical Learning Groups
4) Serve as a teaching attending for third year students on the inpatient service or in
the clinic.
5) Assist with scheduled simulation sessions in the STEPS center for residents.
III. Service Duties
1) Attend on Inpatient Medical Services as assigned by the Section Chief of Internal
Medicine and the Chair of Medicine.
2) Outpatient Clinic duties as assigned by the Chief of General Internal Medicine
3) Command Center shifts as assigned by the Program Director
4) Hospitalist shifts (nursing home) as assigned by the Program Director and Section
of Hospital Medicine
IV. Recruitment
1) The Chief Resident will play an active role in house staff recruitment by
coordinating and providing tours for intern applicants.
2) Shares in the coordination and hosting of applicant dinners.
3) Hosts applicants at conferences and other activities.
4) Contacts applicants to address questions and assists with second visits.
5) Interview candidates during the interview season (Oct - Jan)
V. Research
1) Participate in research and quality improvement projects.
VI. Miscellaneous Duties
1) Chief Resident may be asked to coordinate or participate in various special
departmental projects or functions.
