Responsible for preparing tissue specimens by treating with chemicals, slicing, and mounting on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis.
Essential Functions
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Performs specimen collection, accessioning and logging routines.
Assists pathologists with tissue grossing procedures.
Processes, embeds, and sections tissues for slides.
Performs preventive maintenance and quality-control procedures such as oiling and cleaning microtomes according to schedule, recording temperatures on various instruments, changing the processor according to procedure, and changing staining solutions.
Ensures aseptic techniques and observes health safety protocols during the cleanup procedure to minimize risks to self and co-workers.
Observes hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices and maintains a safe, clean, and prepared work area.
Performs other duties as assigned Complies with all policies and standards

Trade/Technical/Vocational Diploma Related Field of Study required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must possess fundamental knowledge of basic histotechnique to include fixation, decalcifications, processing, embedding, routine and special stains and frozen sections.

  • Must be able to perform certain special stains (i.e. Oil Red O).

  • Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills.

  • Participates in relevant continuing education programs.
