Job Summary:

We are seeking candidates to apply for the rare opportunity to join a newly created department in the School of Medicine and Public Health as an administrative leader. The Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Education Manager, in partnership with the Vice Chair for Education, will support the advancement of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery education mission through personnel management, learner/trainee recruitment, strategic planning, and direct support of various aspects of the department's education portfolio. This includes oversight and support of all aspects of the department's education mission, including medical student, graduate, residency, fellowship, postdoctoral, and continuing medical education.

The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (Oto-HNS), to be established as an individual department in July of 2025, is currently based in the Department of Surgery. Oto-HNS offers the highest quality of education to a large variety of learners, providing training to well over 100 individuals each year through clinical rotations, extramurally funded traineeships, externships, and more. In addition to a highly successful residency program, Oto-HNS offers post-residency clinical fellowships in Head and Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery and in Laryngology, as well as an NIH-funded Voice Research Training Program (the only T32 in the country in Voice and Voice Disorders). Otolaryngology-HNS is also home to the largest Speech Language Pathology Clinical Fellowship in the country, and recently created a clinical externship in Audiology.


Responsibilities:
Leads the development, implementation, and ongoing operations of one or more academic programs to ensure effectiveness in meeting strategic, departmental, and student development goals. May manage the program budget and outreach activities and supervise program staff. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.

  • 15% Leads the development and implementation of academic program initiatives
  • 10% May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
  • 20% Serves as the liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups to identify and maintain academic program-related partnerships
  • 10% Identifies, proposes, and implements new or revised unit operational policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and academic program objectives
  • 10% Evaluates existing academic program strategy and makes recommendations to unit leadership for program enhancement
  • 5% May manage the unit budget and approve unit expenditures
  • 20% Provides full service advising resources and services, provides information about educational options and academic requirements, and communicates directly with students regarding all aspects of the advising process
  • 10% Manages degree programs and/or certificates, high impact practice programming and events, and curriculum development and implementation

Preferred Qualifications: Highly qualified candidates will demonstrate at least one of the following preferred qualifications:
- At least 2 years of education administration experience
- Strategic planning experience
- Direct experience supporting and/or managing medical student, residency, fellowship, or continuing medical education
- People management (supervisory) experience


Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Additional Information:

This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and every four years.

University sponsorship is not available for this position, including transfers of sponsorship.
