The Mankin & Vasquez-Laslop lab studies molecular mechanisms of protein synthesis. We are investigating how the ribosome, the most ancient and sophisticated molecular machine of the cell, makes proteins, how translation factors help it in this endeavor, and how antibiotics prevent it from doing its job. We are also engineering the ribosome to enable new functions and get insights in its origin and evolution.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Keep accurate records of the experiments suitable for writing manuscripts and grant proposals.
  • Participate in weekly lab meetings, Journal Clubs and common seminars within the Department.
  • Carry out experiments aimed at understanding the mechanisms of protein synthesis and antibiotic action.
  • May supervise graduate, professional, and undergraduate students in their research projects.
  • Present results of the studies at the laboratory meetings, the seminars of the Center for Biomolecular Sciences, and regional, national, and international scientific meetings.
  • Present most recent scientific papers relevant to the subject of the study at the laboratory Journal Club meetings.
  • Prepare drafts of the scientific papers for publication.
  • Participate in common duties required for the maintenance of the successful laboratory operation and safety.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in science or related field required. Master's degree in science preferred.
    • A minimum of 5 years' related research experience.
    • Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of research principles, concepts, practices, and methods.
    • Proficient in specific lab research techniques.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Master's degree in science preferred.
    • PhD in Biology, Biochemistry or Molecular Biology with an emphasis on RNA biology or protein synthesis strongly preferred.
    • Previous experience with lab work.
    • Protein and DNA/RNA handling experience is preferred.
