Job Description:

Position Summary:

The Manager of Processing + Underwriting is responsible for managing and leading processing and underwriting functions within the Mortgage Operations Department with primary focus on the following: conforming, non-conforming, and construction loan processing and underwriting. The incumbent will oversee the daily back-office operations within these functional areas to ensure staffing and workflow efficiencies are continuously improving to meet and exceed industry standards and member and business partner experiences. Work closely with the Vice President of Mortgage Operations, Head of Mortgage Lending, Mortgage Sales Managers, Systems Administrator and all other necessary positions to ensure that each department performs as expected and works collaboratively to meet established goals and objectives.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Responsible for managing the underwriting, processing and construction departments and related day-to-day back-office mortgage operations in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Ensure that underwriting, processing and construction functions and positions are meeting or achieving industry standard in volume, units, productivity, and efficiency.
  • Ensure staffing levels are sufficient to maintain maximum workflow while achieving established goals and objectives.
  • Ensure the underwriting, processing and construction departments meet on a regular basis for recognition and to discuss objectives and performance goals, including frequent collaboration with processing and underwriting teams.
  • Ensure all job responsibilities are cross trained and we have a backup for each employee and area.
  • Ensure that all relevant procedures and policies are developed in a uniform manner, maintained in a central location and are accessible to all employees.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and coaching employees; planning, assigning, and directing work volume; performance evaluation, rewards and recognition; and assisting with issues and their resolution.
  • Develop and maintain a formalized, structured, comprehensive training program to ensure the mortgage department is kept current with regulatory changes, industry standards, compliance, systems, quality control, and operational standards.
  • Collaborate with mortgage department leadership team in leading periodic management and departmental meetings.
  • Assist with preparation and reporting of monthly performance metrics.
  • Responsible for assisting in strategic planning of mortgage department initiatives.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as necessary for the continued growth and advancement of the Credit Union.

Leadership Expectations:

  • Communicate and cascade information including but not limited to organizational purpose, critical measures, strategies, and progress as it relates to the department and individual employee goals and success.
  • Responsible for staff development by providing timely, ongoing, consistent direction, performance coaching and honest feedback through dialog, mid-year reviews, annual reviews, and informal day-to-day coaching to ensure accountability and effective execution.
  • Responsible for own continual individual self-development and improvement of the credit union's Leadership Success Criteria.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Proficient use of mortgage systems applications, including but not limited to: Encompass, WebXtender, XP2, and additional vendor website applications.
  • Extensive knowledge of mortgage products, financial services, lending, secondary market activities, real estate compliance, closing processes, training, and communication skills.
  • Divergent managerial skills including delegation, coaching, and demonstrated leadership abilities among peers, employees, and in the community and with various stakeholders in the processes.
  • Knowledge of and ability to manage internal and external relationships with all parties involved in the loan processing and underwriting processes
  • Ability to make complex decisions.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of formal training and work experience in residential mortgage underwriting, management, mortgage operations and secondary market activities preferred.
  • 4+ years' experience in residential mortgage underwriting, management, mortgage operations, training, and secondary market activities highly preferred.
  • 2+ years' leadership experience
  • Understanding of federal mortgage laws and secondary market guidelines.
