Job Announcement

Conducts policy and land use planning studies and other initiatives as assigned. Prepares and develops information on existing conditions to be used in special studies, development review analysis and plan amendments. Makes site investigations to identify existing conditions. Makes planning recommendations and evaluates impact of proposals. Prepares reports on complex issues as requested by the branch chief. Researches, analyzes, and makes recommendations to senior staff, planning commission and board of supervisors on special and unique planning studies, complicated development applications and assigned tasks. Oversees research for studies. Collects data through resource material and field investigation. Analyzes data, using appropriate methodologies. Prepares results for written and oral presentations. Provides research and critical support to the county attorney's office on land use-related litigation, as assigned.

Note: Individual must be willing to participate in work assignments and meetings during the evening hours. Top candidate may be interviewed by the Director, Planning Division.

Note: In accordance with current Fairfax County telework and personnel policies, this position is eligible for partial telework. Telework enrollment and continuance are subject to supervisor approval and county policy.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in a planning related field; plus, four years of experience in a planning-related field.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in planning or closely related field.
  • Progressively responsible professional experience in comprehensive land use planning.
  • Strong abilities in written and oral communications.
  • Ability to handle multiple deadlines.
  • Experience using word processing, e-mail, database, and GIS software.
  • Experience working in a local government planning office.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position is primarily sedentary; however, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items less than 15 pounds in weight. Work assignments may also require that the employee make site visits and inspections. Work requires the ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
