Position Summary

POSITION SUMMARY

The University of New Mexico's (UNM) Facilities Design and Construction (FDC) department seeks an Interior Designer to join our vibrant, committed team of professionals who support the built environment at UNM's campuses across the state. UNM FDC provides a seamless delivery of professional support services to internal clients using best practices in capital project planning, development, and construction.

The Interior Designer will:

  • Manage design elements of interior and exterior spaces across the University. Work independently or in conjunction with professional architectural service consultants and/or furniture distribution vendors to provide coherent, branded University environments for a broad range of institutional needs. Facilitate, coordinate, and/or lead the execution of multiple, major and minor capital projects to ensure each is completed within the prescribed scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Independently manage space planning and design efforts throughout the project development process and serve as primary liaison and collaborator between client groups, consultants, and various institutional service units. Provide support and guidance to leadership and project management team on area(s) of expertise.
  • Oversee project design, bids, orders, and installation for clients to ensure design/function is achieved and consistent with overall Institutional design guidelines. Review, negotiate, and process change requests and change orders.
  • Participate in
    interior and exterior designed space of new facilities, additions, and
    renovations as assigned; concurrently managing multiple simple to complex projects from assignment through project close-out.
  • Review projects
    for affordability, consistency, and completeness of design, according to
    project objectives; inspect furnishings and finishes to
    ensure conformance to plans and specifications.
  • Manage or oversee project support activities
    including development and maintenance of job files and tracking of project
    schedule and budget; directly responsible for scope, budget, and schedule
    development of assigned projects.
  • Oversee and coordinate activities of consultants, contractors, vendor personnel, and suppliers: monitor contracts for compliance and controls costs. Perform quality
    control inspections to ensure adherence to contract specifications and industry
    standards.
  • Research, compose, and format content of all Interior
    Environments Standards to ensure a unified approach to quality, functionality,
    and longevity. Maintain broad knowledge of current and emerging products, materials, and
    design.
  • Oversee or manage the planning and installation of furniture, fixture, equipment,
    and art; may be responsible or may share responsibility for occupant move-in to
    new or renovated facilities.
  • Manage and supervise personnel to including
    hiring and performance management; providing guidance and training to
    personnel.
  • Assist in the annual budget planning process. Monitor all
    departmental project-related purchases and performs monthly purchase
    reconciliation; receive and review pay requests from consultants, contractors, and vendors, and
    approves for payment.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Currently, FDC is working a hybrid schedule, three days in-office, two days
remote; this may fluctuate in the future.

Conditions of Employment
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis



Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven
    ability to handle
    multiple tasks at once, coordinate with contractors and vendors, stick to
    deadlines, and manage a project's budget.
  • Extensive knowledge of
    materials, finishes, and furnishings, knowing what works best for
    different spaces and how to combine them to achieve desired aesthetics and
    functionality.
  • Strong collaboration
    skills and experience working well with contractors, architects, and other
    professionals to ensure the project is executed seamlessly.
