We are currently seeking to hire a Plant Mechanic to join our Power Generation team at our Hydro Generation Operation Facility at Fresh Pond, located approximately 60 miles east of Sacramento and 15 miles east of Placerville.

Purpose

Under general supervision, performs mechanical maintenance, repair and overhaul of hydroelectric generating systems.

Nature and Scope

This is specialized work requiring superior skill and know how in a critical plant maintenance function (involving close tolerance machining, code certified welding, and maintenance of critical plant components requiring precise tolerances and detailed documentation) and may act as lead over Mechanics and Helpers on assigned jobs. Equipment worked on and the nature of the skills needed in maintaining the equipment determines whether a Plant Mechanic Apprentice or a Plant Mechanic performs the work.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled mechanical work in the installation, maintenance, repair, overhaul, and rebuilding of equipment and facilities of electrical generating plants.
  • Works on hydro and related subsystems for lubrication, cooling, governing, fuel handling, water storage, and on-plant and site services.
  • Consults drawings, manuals, catalogs and other sources of information.
  • Lays out work, cuts, fits, joins and performs skilled operations on light and heavy metals and other materials; does pipe work and makes pressure tests.
  • Cleans and overhauls valves, pumps, spray systems, condensers and pressure vessels; aligns shafts, fits bearings and replaces seals and packing.
  • Maintains, repairs and overhauls geared mechanisms and operating machinery; runs tests and makes adjustments.
  • Operates vehicles, industrial tractors, cranes and hoists; performs rigging incidental to regular assignments.
  • Undertakes skilled tasks of the acquired specialized craft.

Required Experience Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship or equivalent training in the mechanical trade. Demonstrated experience at a Journey level in the installation, maintenance, and/or assembly of large and complex equipment such as piping systems, pressure units, valves, gates, turbines, motors, and/or generators in power generating stations. Basic computer and key boarding skills.

Knowledge Of
Safety procedures; hydraulics; various mechanical systems steam, water and fuel; valve disassembly; rigging procedures; and common shop equipment. May require knowledge of: ferrous and nonferrous materials; procedures to machine a variety of materials; sheet metal work, layout and manufacture.
Skills To
Perform basic shop mathematics; use and read precision instruments such as micrometers, veneer calipers and dial indicators; complete work requests clearly and accurately; read complex written text contained in plant procedure manuals; read and understand blueprints and schematics; produce a finished product within tolerances; safely operate cranes; operate drill presses; and communicate effectively orally. May require the skill to: safely operate machining equipment, engine lathes, milling machines vertical and horizontal, cutting machines, threading machines, lapping machines, grinders air, electric, and surface; use TIG, MIG, gas, arc and/or plasma welding; use cutting torches; perform certified rod welding; braxing; silver soldering; and preparing pipe or material for welding and pipefitting.
Required Licenses/Certificates

Must possess and maintain a valid California Drivers License CDL and a satisfactory driving record (not more than two moving violations in the last two years).

  • Lathe and Mill machining Hydro mechanical maintenance
  • Welding
  • Heavy rigging
  • Complex hydraulics
  • Crane operation and maintenance

On-Site

This role will be an on-site role that will require being in person at one of SMUD's campuses daily to complete worktasks.
