POSITION SUMMARY
Provides and coordinates an overall protection philosophy for Hoosier Energy’s generation, transmission, and distribution facilities and oversees the design and application of optimum system protection for all related equipment and generation units. Assures the development of designs and specifications of Hoosier Energy’s energy measurement systems or devices. Assures compliance with Hoosier Energy’s project management structure, NERC/RRO and other industry standards and successful mitigation of constraining issues. Ensures communication and collaboration within and between departments.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides the technical expertise, specifies, and coordinates the system relay protection schemes and equipment. Provides the layout and equipment specifications for all metering packages. Prepares review specifications, operational checkouts and other verifications of newly acquired equipment in order to make recommendations concerning equipment acceptability. Calculates the relay and meter settings and designs the logic and control schemes that will ensure compatibility with the overall network protection and measurement systems. Prepares accurate bid specifications for major substation equipment. Provides technical input for the review of all future plans for facilities.
- Serves as the project manager when necessary, consistent with Hoosier Energy’s project management structure, for relay protection and metering capital projects. Develops relay and metering capital work plan budgets and short- and long-range schedules for relay and meter installations in coordination with other departments.
- Oversees the design and proper application of transmission and generation relay protection equipment. Oversees the design and proper installation of meters, transducers, recording instruments and other associated energy measurement equipment. Reviews and researches system outage reports, oscillograph charts, relay targets, equipment damage and device failures and recommends or takes corrective actions as appropriate.
- Maintains records of settings of protection and energy measurement equipment. Reviews or prepares reports about system growth and load data and recommends systems modifications. Prepares and maintains system fault studies and other system studies towards checking protection coordination. Documents field modifications to station drawings as required.
- Analyzes issues resulting in reduced system reliability and capacity, increased costs and risk to identify needed projects and studies related to assigned area of expertise. Develops alternatives that meet project objectives and utilize sound engineering methods to demonstrate project feasibility.
- Recommends changes that will lead to improvements in key performance indicators based on analysis of incidents that have impacted performance. Utilizes knowledge and experience gained in assigned area of expertise to assist others with solution development. Determines appropriate balance between predictive and corrective activities.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent minimum
- Ability to obtain P.E. license is desirable
Experience:
- Five years’ of progressively more technical responsibility in the design and application of relay and metering facilities and equipment
- Other levels of experience may be considered
