Symetra has an exciting new opportunity to join us as a Senior Financial Reporting Specialist - Insurance!

About the role

Symetra's Enterprise Financial Reporting department is looking to add a highly technical individual contributor with a focus on insurance accounting (GAAP and STAT) to our accounting policy team. You will work closely with teams across the Finance and Actuarial division to ensure accurate accounting, financial presentation and disclosure. You will also have the opportunity to manage technical accounting-related projects.

What you will do



  • Research and document technical accounting issues related to Insurance Accounting (STAT and GAAP Outcomes)


  • Produce documented research of accounting treatment, including financial statement impacts and operational considerations, for new or complex transactions.
  • Develop and propose recommendations where judgement in application is required.
  • Discuss issues and coordinate with external auditors, as appropriate.


  • Technical reviewer of Enterprise Reporting deliverables for accounting accuracy


  • Review MD&A, Financial Statement footnotes, and other key management deliverables (GAAP and STAT).


  • Maintenance and review of Insurance-related Accounting Policies


  • Maintain, review, and revise existing insurance accounting policy documentation as needed.


  • Assist in the implementation of new accounting guidance


  • Stay current with developments in the insurance industry, participating in applicable industry calls.
  • Identify and communicate new GAAP and Statutory guidance and interpretations affecting Symetra.


  • Prepare and deliver presentations and training on insurance related topics to a broad range of audiences

Compensation

Salary Range: $113,700 - $189,400 plus eligibility for the company annual bonus program.

Who You Are:



  • High School Diploma is required
  • A BA/BS in Accounting, or Finance
  • Minimum of 4-5 years of experience, preferably in public accounting and with exposure to insurance or financial services, preferred
  • Experience with LDTI, preferred
  • CPA or CPA-eligible, preferred
  • Experience with the preparation and review of financial statement and footnote disclosures
  • Technical accounting research skills and the desire to use them - analyzing, documenting, and supporting conclusions
  • Exposure to internal controls over financial reporting and related documentation
  • Goal-oriented with a track record of task and project completion
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, as the need arises (quarter and year-ends, ad hoc projects)
  • Self-managed - independently identifies and completes research and related documentation quickly
  • High expectations for themselves, with an irresistible urge to exceed them
  • Creativity, problem solving, and decision-making skills
  • A positive attitude and sense of humor!
