The Position

Are you ready to accelerate the application of human genetics to advance therapeutics in the cardiovascular and metabolic (CVM) space? Genentech invites applications for the Distinguished Scientist (Group Leader) position within our Human Genetics Department. Join us to leverage our unique, extensive genetic, genomic, proteomic, and clinical data repositories. Drive innovative research strategies that power the genetic basis of disease risk, therapeutic response, and patient stratification, and collaborate with our recognized scientific leaders to make breakthrough healthcare solutions a reality.

The Opportunity

  • Spearhead and implement research strategies to accelerate human genetics applications in CVM therapeutics.

  • Collaborate extensively with the Human Genetics team and other scientific and leadership teams to integrate genetic and genomic insights into therapeutic development.

  • Utilize large-scale experimental and computational capabilities, including AI/ML, to place genetic findings in their functional context.

  • Identify and characterize genetic disease risk, progression, and therapeutic responses.

  • Lead efforts in target identification, causal inference, biomarker discovery, and clinical development strategies.

  • Contribute to a collaborative community involving research biology, clinical development, translational medicine, and computational sciences teams.

Who You Are

  • You are a PhD with a strong focus on statistical genetics, genetic epidemiology, computational biology, cardiovascular medicine, or related fields.

  • At least 15 years of experience using human genetics to understand human disease (with a focus on cardiovascular and metabolic disease), in academia and/or industry.

  • Proven knowledge of biological and clinical principles underlying CVM therapeutics.

  • Recognized leader in your field, equivalent to a full professor at a top research university.

  • Proficient in statistical and computational methods relevant to human genetics, especially for complex traits.

  • Strong computational skills, including large-scale data analysis and causal inference.

  • Excellent research record with scientific publications in top-tier journals, and a history of managing large and complex projects

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to present and explain findings to diverse audiences

  • Motivated to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative research environment.

  • Passionate about applying human genetics to solve biological problems and achieve translational goals.

  • Committed to and experience of supporting the growth and development of colleagues including direct reports

  • Experience in industry and/or biotechnology settings

Preferreds

  • Competence in Mendelian randomization (MR)-based approaches.

  • Keen interest in the broader applicability of CVM research insights across various disease areas.

Relocation benefits are available for this posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $198,000 - $367,000. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
