Location:

New York, NY

WIRED seeks an experienced journalist to helm a weekly, premium newsletter.

In this role, you'll be responsible for producing one must-read newsletter per week in your area of expertise. Coverage areas can vary depending on an applicant's individual strengths, but should be in a core WIRED topic such as politics, Big Tech, artificial intelligence, internet culture, public health, and beyond.

You should have a demonstrated ability to build and reach a large audience, and a proven capacity to deliver scoops, exclusives, or stories that can't be found anywhere else. We're less interested in takes than we are in hard news, and the ability to put that information into a broader context. We are looking for a journalist with a proven track record of delivering high-value journalism that can drive digital subscriptions. The ideal candidate is deeply sourced within their beat, consistently uncovering exclusive stories and insights that set our coverage apart. They understand how to leverage their reporting to attract and retain subscribers, engage audiences, and drive reader loyalty in a competitive news landscape.

While your focus will be on a single, timely newsletter each week, you will also contribute to the newsroom more broadly, covering breaking news on your beat that can't wait for the next send or otherwise collaborating with colleagues when their coverage intersects with yours. There are opportunities to work on long-form feature stories as part of this role as well, although your priority will be your newsletter's launch and continued growth. You should also be prepared to engage in a wide range of storytelling formats, such as social, podcasts, video series, and live events.

This Senior Correspondent will report to the Executive Editor, News. Depending on the coverage area, the role will also work closely with one of three WIRED Directors, and is part of a growing and increasingly global newsroom of smart, kind, nerdy, and well-informed colleagues who are always brimming with ideas and eager to help each other out. This role is in-office (4 days/week) and we are open to candidates in San Francisco, New York, or London.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Ideate, write, and grow a premium newsletter in a core WIRED topic

  • Break impactful news and deliver scoops on a regular basis

  • Engage and grow a loyal readership that drives digital subscriptions

  • Pitch, report, and write news stories as needed about subjects on your beat that fall outside of your newsletter's cadence

  • Collaborate with other members of your desk, and journalists from across the WIRED newsroom

  • Collaborate with audio, video, events, and social media teams as needed to develop ways of telling stories on other platforms

  • Work collaboratively with global markets on all relevant stories or packages

  • Additional projects/stories as assigned

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years experience as a tech, science, or politics journalist with a track record of breaking news, driving subscriber growth, and building and reaching a large audience

  • A proven track record of scoops and the ability to consistently break news on a beat

  • Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage a constantly evolving workload and prioritize appropriately

  • A clear, engaging, jargon-free writing style

This is a guild position.

The expected base salary range for this position is from $125,000-$200,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
