Temporary Post-Conviction Project Legal Intern

Students should be able to commit to, at a minimum, the following 2025 work schedule:

Survivor Intake:
Under the supervision of CEASE Clinic staff, interns will travel to state prisons and survivor service provider agencies to complete intakes under staff supervision, and work with various public, private, local, and statewide agencies to connect survivors to pro bono attorneys, advocates, and other survivor resources and services.

Legal Services:
Under the supervision of CEASE Clinic licensed attorneys and in accordance with the Supreme Court of Georgia's Student Practice Act, work on all phases of litigation brought on behalf of survivors. Legal services may include any, or a combination of the following: legal research and writing; client intake and case evaluation; discovery and case investigation, which may include records requests, document review, depositions, and drafting written discovery requests; legal document drafting, such as petitions, motions, and responses; client representation, and other practical litigation skills; communication with clients, experts, service providers, and opposing counsel; participate in general office and case management upkeep duties, including, but not limited computer data entry of intake and other case information, filing, copying, drafting and filing court documents, and serving notice.

Legal services also include engaging in interdisciplinary practice in partnership with social work staff and interns to ensure the provision of holistic and trauma-responsive advocacy.

Project Development:
Under the supervision of CEASE Clinic staff, conduct research on trauma-responsive legal intake, pro bono attorney training curriculum, and community outreach and education on legal resources and remedies. Assist in developing trauma-responsive intake policies and protocols, reaching out to prison social workers, mental health professionals, and survivor service providers to build partnerships and plan intake clinics. Assist in building a network of pro bono attorneys and lay advocates, and assist in providing training and technical assistance to ensure quality and trauma-responsive representation for survivors.
