Senior Paralegal

Job Summary

The IP Paralegal will have broad experience supporting patent prosecution and docketing for US, PCT and foreign jurisdictions. Incumbent will have the ability to perform tasks required by an active international patent docket.

This is a part time position in San Diego.

Roles & Responsibilities

This position has responsibility for:



  • Review, process, docket, and de-docket daily incoming correspondence and documents from outside counsel, foreign associates and internal IP team ensuring integrity and accuracy of the data.
  • Manage e-document storage, review, process, and instruct local counsel on prosecution deadlines.
  • Ensure that risk management is safe-guarded and reporting from law firms is complete and accurate.
  • Open new patent records in docketing database
  • Manage docket reports and alert IP team as necessary to meet deadlines
  • Assist with annuity management and coordination, specifically addressing the discrepancy reports from Annuities Team.
  • Assist with docket management service, specifically addressing day-to-day discrepancy reports.
  • Provide data inputs (Invention level and basic Patent level, such as family tree 'tagging' of priorities, inventor data). Security based inputs that Docket cannot do.
  • Create New Patent Records (e.g., filing plan decisions)
  • Scheduling for Initial Inventor Meetings (IIMs).
  • Provide administrative and IP prosecution paralegal duties as needed



Minimum Qualifications (Experience and Skills)



  • 8 years of law office and/or corporate legal department experience supporting US and foreign intellectual property and litigation matters
  • 3 years of active US and international patent docket management experience; including experience with all types of documents and stages involved in US patent prosecution, and reasonable familiarity with PCT documents and procedures
  • Experience supporting overseas patent prosecution (PCT) and thorough knowledge of at least one commercial patent information management system is required, as well as experience working with, and coordinating between, internal IP teams and external counsel.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of the company's internal and personnel affairs and company information. Understands ethics of position including ethical rules in regards to confidentiality, privilege and attorney work product.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to multi-task
  • Collaborates effectively and professionally with everyone inside and outside the company
  • Anticipates problems and issues and exercises independent judgment to make sound, justifiable decisions and take action in solving problems while knowing when and how to escalate.
  • Expert in Adobe, Microsoft Office and at least one commercial docket management system
  • The position requires excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills



Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience with Anaqua system for data entry and docketing
  • Experience working within internationally dispersed multicultural teams
  • Notary Public, commissioned in the state of California, a plus



Education Requirements



  • Bachelor's Degree and paralegal certificate
