The Position

Seize the opportunity to join Genentech's Facilities & Engineering Department as the Upper Campus Plant Engineer, where you will be the Technical System Owner driving the optimal performance of our equipment. Use your technical expertise to manage and maintain valuable assets, ensuring compliance and operational excellence.

Collaborate with other Plant Engineers, Site Services teams, and our Integrated Facility Management (IFM) provider to deliver exceptional technical and engineering support. Responsibilities:
  • Essential Team Member:
    • Be an essential part of the SSF Upper Campus Operations Team to provide long-term solutions and troubleshooting on equipment and utility infrastructure.

  • Technical System Ownership:
    • Ensure optimal equipment performance and meet key performance indicators (KPIs).

    • Provide technical expertise in system design, functionality, and requirements.

    • Maintain assets by updating engineering documentation and risk/criticality assessments, defining maintenance strategies and plans, and managing critical spare parts.

    • Conduct condition assessments and oversee the asset lifecycle by creating data-driven dashboards.

    • Audit processes and documentation to ensure compliance.

    • Collaborate closely with other Plant Engineers, Site Services teams, and our Integrated Facility Management (IFM) service provider to provide holistic solutions for our campus.

  • Proactive Improvement and Innovation:
    • Identify and recommend opportunities for improvement including reducing costs and operational risks, improving operational efficiencies, increasing quality and safety, and clarifying and simplifying processes.

    • Introduce and implement innovative solutions to drive continuous improvement and optimization.

  • Reliability and Lifecycle Management:
    • Evaluate and improve the reliability of all campus systems to ensure business continuity through effective asset lifecycle management.

  • Capital Project Support:
    • Provide design input, specify system requirements, and oversee equipment installation.

    • Verify system operations by reviewing commissioning documentation, and identifying critical alarms and setpoints.

  • Facility Management:
    • Ensure campus facilities systems are operated and maintained according to best practices.

    • Actively partner with Site Services; Security, Safety, Health and Environment (SSHE); Design & Construction (including designers, architects, and general contractors); and Real Estate and Workplace Effectiveness (RE/WE) to provide guidance on our operations.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, or an equivalent field of Engineering.

  • 6+ years of relevant experience in designing and operating facilities, equipment, and utilities in high tech, industrial, life sciences, or chemical manufacturing industries.

  • Expertise in optimizing equipment operations.

  • Ability to develop solutions for a variety of complex problems and initiatives.

  • Understanding of interfaces with automation and controls including Building Automation Systems (BAS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and Data Historians.

  • Working knowledge of ANSI/ASHRAE, NEMA, NFPA, EPA, and OSHA standards.

  • Proven track record of developing practical solutions and successfully deploying new technology solutions to operations teams.

  • Extensive knowledge of utility equipment such as large chillers, steam boilers, air compressors, and pumping systems is highly desired.

  • Experience with GMP maintenance operations, document control, processing, and repair is preferred.

  • Experience with Lean/Six Sigma business process improvement methodologies is strongly preferred.

  • Outstanding communication skills with the ability to clearly present plans and outcomes to management.

  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.

  • Self-motivated with excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Exceptional customer service, technical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

  • Reliable, detail-oriented, and proficient in coordinating tasks.

  • Capable of working independently with minimal supervision.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $109,500 - 203,300 USD Annual. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
