About the Job

University of Minnesota Lifeguards are responsible for overseeing the safety of pool patrons while swimming and utilizing the pool area. Patrons range from youth swimming lesson participants, collegiate and professional competitive swimmers, to community, faculty and staff members. The Aquatic Center on the Minneapolis campus includes one 8 lane, 50 meter, deep water lap pool with moveable bulkhead, 17' deep diving well with spring boards and platforms, the shallow water Cooke 10 therapy and lesson pool, and the deep water Cooke 15 lap pool. The St. Paul Gymnasium includes an 8 lane shallow water lap and lesson pool. This position will assist in a variety of areas.

Work Responsibilities

  • Enforce all pool rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean swimming environment.
  • Prevent injuries, eliminate hazards and activate Emergency Action Plans and render emergency care within the scope of your training.
  • Attend in-services, meetings, safety week and monitor the online sub board and subbing for special event shifts.
  • Work alone or paired with other lifeguards in an aquatic environment.
  • Maintain a level of personal fitness to perform all duties associated with being a lifeguard.
  • Manage traffic at pool entrances during aquatics events and during normal pool hours.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned by Head lifeguards, Aquatic Coordinators, Assistant Director and Aquatics Director.
Qualifications

Job Requirements

  • Current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR-PRO, AED, and First Aid.
  • Ability to work days, nights, weekends, or some early mornings.
  • Successfully complete pre-interview skills test of a 200 yard continuous swim, a surface dive for manikin at 17' water depth, water tread with manikin for one minute, and water tread without the assistance of your hands.
  • Ability to lift and move 25-50 pounds
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $18.00; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
