The Medical Social Consultant works as a member of a dynamic team of medical professionals and outreach workers to provide therapeutic services to adult clients diagnosed with HIV/AIDS at the University of Illinois at Chicago Community Clinic Network's (UCCN) clinical site. The Medical Social Consultant is responsible for diagnosing and treating patients with mental disorders, as well as various behavioral and emotional disturbances. Staff will provide mental health assessments, individual and group therapy, family education and support activities for outpatient clients to meet their emotional and social needs. The Medical Social Consultant will participate in weekly clinical case conference meetings with medical staff and outreach workers to ensure continuity of patient care. The Medical Social Consultant will provide referrals to those patients with psychosocial needs such as, but not limited to: housing, food, substance abuse treatment, and legal services. Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Coordination of HIV/AIDS psychosocial care and treatment to at risk adults; providing individual and group therapy services in a clinical and outreach settings.
  • Collaborate with medical professionals and outreach workers to assess patient needs
  • Updating and maintaining patient files with treatment plans.


  • Minimum Qualifications Requirements:

    1. Master's degree from an accredited school or university in social or behavioral science or a related health specialty area.
      Based on institutional requirements for each position:
    2. A. Current State of IL Licensure as a Licensed Social Worker or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.


    OR

    B. Three (3) years (36 months) of progressively more responsible full-time experience in social work in a medical/clinical or social service agency setting.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Thorough knowledge of social work methods and principles.
    • General understanding of public healthcare programs.
    • General knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service (i.e. customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction).
    • Knowledge of psychology concerning human behavior and performance including the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of affective disorders.
    • Skill in the identification of needs and coordination of services to meet needs.
    • Judgment and decision making skills - the ability to consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
    • Social perceptiveness skills - being aware of their reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with staff, families, and agencies.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience and effectively convey information to others verbally.
