Requisition Id14812 Overview: We are seeking an Industrial Hygiene Technician who will conduct various Industrial Hygiene (IH) sampling and related instrument maintenance. This position resides in the Health and Safety Technical Services Group in the Safety and Operations Services Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Major Duties/Responsibilities: Primary roles may one or more of the following duties:
Perform field sampling for a variety of chemical, physical, and biological agents. Clearly and completely documenting all sampling activities. Conduct maintenance and calibration of field industrial hygiene instruments. Provide Industrial Hygiene Technician support to the Emergency Management Response Organization. Supports professional staff as a technician independently performing a range of complex tasks on short and long term projects. Able to learn and apply complex concepts related to technical disciplines. Basic Qualifications:
An AS degree in a technical field with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, or related field experience or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and specialized training are required. Knowledge of OSHA standards, ANSI standards and other applicable industrial hygiene/industrial safety requirements. Ability to perform and complete work independently handling problems and desired systems. Work as a fully competent team member in support of projects, plans and schedules. Experience in a multi-discipline, multi-task and integrated/functional organizational environment. Skilled in verbal and written communications including report writing/sampling documentation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician or other Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) certification. Current Tennessee asbestos inspector credentials and asbestos sampling experience. Familiarity with common industrial hygiene sampling methods, including but not limited to, lead, beryllium and silica. Experience calibrating, maintaining, and using IH equipment. Experience setting up sampling media in accordance with OSHA and NIOSH sampling methods. Experience working with personal computer software including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Access, SharePoint and PowerPoint. Experience working in a changing environment that requires interfacing with multiple research personnel and Facility support staff as a team player. Ability to work occasional off-shift and weekends as work coverage demands. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory. Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
Certain activities may require the use of protective equipment including respirators and protective suits and other equipment to protect the eyes, skin, legs and feet as necessary. Work tasks may involve physical demands, including, but not limited to: standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling heavy items, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and reaching (high & low level). Work may be in varied environmental conditions, including, but not limited to: outdoors (heat/cold), confined spaces, radiological areas, elevated surfaces, hazardous material storage or contaminated areas. Operation of motor vehicles on site and over public roads.
