Job Summary:

Individuals in this role participate in Manager on Duty shifts where they assist patrons, student staff, and act as a resource for other library staff based on scheduling needs of the department. When not working as the Manager on Duty, Access Services staff contribute to project teams supporting the mission of the unit. In this role, Access Services staff act as a bridge between patrons and UW-Madison Libraries. You will build relationships with student staff, library patrons, and a broad understanding of library operations.


Responsibilities:
Performs a wide range of complex library services which support the day-to-day operations to provide access to information resources in a variety of formats. Hires, trains, and guides student employees.

  • 15% Provides complex support to the day-to-day operations of library services to provide guidance in the use of library information resources, operations, and policies; or to acquire, prepare, and preserve library information resources for use
  • 10% May assist and educate both face-to-face and remote customers in the use of technologies and tools to create, seek, use, and manage information
  • 5% Interprets policies and procedures to answer non-routine questions and resolve complex issues
  • 5% Utilizes designated library systems, tools, standards, and practices to locate, retrieve, and organize; or describe, edit, preserve, and reformat a variety of library information resources
  • 5% Conducts reference searches to locate relevant materials and answer questions as needed
  • 10% Utilizes library software and systems to retrieve, enter, and report on data using a wide variety of applications
  • 10% Provides complex library services support in absence of a supervisory authority. Acts as a resource to other library staff
  • 15% Hires, trains, and guides student employees and monitors student workflows
  • 10% Contributes to the development of policies and procedures
  • 5% Participates in committee work within the library and the university
  • 10% Contributes to a safe and secure environment for the library's patrons, staff, collections and contents.


Tasks:

  • Maintains access services operations in their home library and contributes to daily operation across library locations through the work of project teams. Supports continuity of library operations through rotational and backup shifts.
  • Works as a Manager on Duty to oversee the general functioning of library services, managing circulation, responding to security and emergency situations, and exercising good judgement in the application of policies and procedures.
  • Facilitates and strengthens access services student staff members' relationship with the Libraries through management, hiring, training, and mentorship.
  • Contributes to service improvement within the Access Services department which may include policy development, aligning departmental strategy with library strategic directions, service assessment, and community building.
  • Assists patrons by providing support navigating UW-Madison resources and identifying areas for service improvement.
  • Manages regular collection and circulation services maintenance tasks related to providing access to library patrons and community.
  • Fosters an inclusive working and learning environment where all can flourish, supports programmatic efforts to engage a broad range of perspectives, backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures.

Work Schedule:

Core hours between 7am-5:30pm, some weekend days required as either rotational or regular schedule.


Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Remote one day per week as available

Additional Information:

The Access Services unit provides connection for library users to library materials and physical spaces. Access Services staff work across campus libraries. Individuals in this unit will be assigned to a home library where they have a dedicated workspace but will regularly work in at least one other location.

Schedules will vary in order to cover daytime library hours, some weekend days required as part of a regular or rotational schedule. Occasional evening hours may be required. Daytime staff will be a part of a daytime cohort in one of two library neighborhoods. Shifts may be adjusted earlier or later to accommodate changes to library hours.
