Sustainability Coordinator

We are seeking a Sustainability Coordinator to join our project teams and play a vital role in advancing sustainable design strategies, supporting building performance analysis, and contributing to green building certification efforts. This position offers a meaningful opportunity to apply sustainability knowledge directly to real-world projects while expanding technical expertise and preparing for future leadership in the field.

In this role, you will work closely with the Building Performance Practice Leader, the Sustainability Leader, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure that sustainability is fully integrated into every phase of design, construction, and operation.

The position provides strong mentorship, hands-on experience with impactful projects, and clear opportunities for career growth. Successful candidates will gain the knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully to Clark Nexsen's commitment to design excellence and to develop into future leaders in sustainable design.

General Responsibilities:

Project Sustainability Support



  • Serve as an integrated sustainability advocate within project teams from concept through construction.
  • Assist in sustainability goal-setting and monitor project alignment throughout design development.
  • Participate actively in charrettes, workshops, and interdisciplinary coordination meetings to establish project sustainability and performance objectives.
  • Conduct research and analysis on sustainable design strategies, including:

    • Passive and high-performance design principles.
    • Energy efficiency and climate-responsive strategies.
    • Water conservation and stormwater management.
    • Indoor environmental quality and healthy material selection.
    • Embodied carbon reduction and life cycle assessments


  • Assist in preparing sustainability narratives for project documentation, proposals, and client presentations.


Certification & Compliance Management



  • Support preparation, organization, and quality control of documentation for LEED, WELL, Green Globes, and federal sustainability certifications.
  • Maintain sustainability scorecards and track project performance against firm and client carbon reduction targets.
  • Collaborate with project teams and third-party consultants to facilitate accurate, timely, and effective sustainability documentation.
  • Assist in assembling data for firm-wide sustainability reporting (AIA 2030, MEP 2040, SE 2050, and internal metrics).


Technical Sustainability Analysis



  • Contribute to early-stage building performance analysis, including:

    • Preliminary energy modeling and climate analysis.
    • Daylight and visual comfort studies.


  • Embodied carbon assessments and material impact evaluations.
  • Support project teams in interpreting analysis results and integrating them into project decision-making.
  • Collaborate with CNCPT and Building Science teams to support advanced performance workflows.


Internal Initiatives & Knowledge Sharing



  • Maintain and enhance internal sustainability resources, including:

    • Best practice guides
    • Project case studies
    • Compliance checklists


  • Support internal sustainability education by contributing to staff training and knowledge-sharing efforts.
  • Assist with sustainability-related content for marketing and business development efforts.


Professional Growth & Contribution



  • Stay current with evolving sustainability practices, tools, and trends (e.g., carbon reduction, regenerative design, resilience, wellness).
  • Share relevant research and industry updates with project teams and the firm.
  • Participate in firm-wide sustainability initiatives and communities of practice.
  • Contribute to advancing Clark Nexsen's sustainability culture and commitment to design excellence.


Education, Technology, and Experience

Education



  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Building Science, Environmental Design, or a related field.
  • Candidates with a sustainability-focused specialization or advanced degrees are encouraged to apply.


Experience



  • Experience or exposure to sustainable design, architecture, engineering, or building performance analysis through internships, research, or professional work.


Certification



  • LEED Green Associate preferred (or willingness to earn within 6 months).
  • LEED AP (BD+C), WELL AP, or other sustainability credentials are a plus.

Physical Requirements

Work is sedentary and often performed in an office setting. The work area is lighted, heated, and ventilated. This position may require extended periods of standing, sitting, as well as some repetitive movements, bending and lifting of minimal weight. Workplace Flexibility

We have selected two common days in the office to nurture collaboration and innovation and to support learning and growth through engagement with colleagues. We are asking everyone to be present on Mondays and Thursdays, with a required third day that will provide additional flexibility and be set between you and your supervisor (with consideration given to your project team members and clients). Our hope is that this schedule will offer the work-life balance that is desired by all, while providing consistent opportunities for face-to-face collaboration and mentorship.
