DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department embodies the university's tradition of excellence as a world-class leader in computer science and engineering education and research. Ranked in the top 20 nationwide, the department is dedicated to research, education and overall excellence.

CSE has approximately 80+ faculty FTE, 20+ professional researchers, 50+ staff in career/casual titles, 300+ tutors, and 175+ TAs. There are over 1,700 undergraduate students enrolled in 3 majors, with annual enrollments of 25,000+. The department has a graduate education program with over 1,000 students (~350 PhD students and over 800 Master's students).

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under supervision by the Academic Personnel Manager, the Academic HR Analyst 1 is responsible for the analysis and administration of academic affairs and personnel for the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department. The incumbent is responsible for all personnel actions for assigned academic appointees (e.g. Postdoc Scholars, Visiting Scholars, etc.).

The incumbent learns to apply professional UC Academic HR concepts, organization and/or system-wide policies, and procedures in the completion of UC Academic HR assignments that are of limited scope and impact. The Academic HR Analyst 1 receives instructions on most work assignments, and regularly consults with more senior HR Analysts and/or manager in the course of completing assignments. Exercises some judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action.

Duties include responsibility for: new appointments, recruitment and hiring, merit and promotion files of assigned academic employees; grievance/disciplinary actions; formation and/or submission of policy exceptions; visas; and UCPath data entry.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Acquiring knowledge of and ability to apply / interpret organization and college policies and procedures which govern academic HR.

  • Knowledge of human resources concepts, policies and procedures. Working knowledge of hiring policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of immigration regulations and experience in the preparation and processing of visa applications.

  • Acquiring knowledge of organization, college, and departmental formal and informal policies and procedures, and understanding of variances to stated policies.

  • Skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Written communication skills with demonstrated ability to effectively compose, edit and proofread letters, memoranda, and summary reports with clear and concise expression, proper grammar, style, spelling and punctuation. Strong verbal communication skills to communicate clearly, effectively and professionally, in person, in writing, via phone and email with people from a variety of backgrounds.

  • Acquiring knowledge of organization's human resource management system (HRMS) and other related business software programs and systems. Demonstrated PC-computer skills and well versed with a variety of software packages for word processing, spreadsheets and database management (Word, Excel, Access, etc.). Knowledge of e-mail systems as a primary form of communication; accomplished skill at navigating the Internet for information retrieval. Demonstrated ability to use all standard office equipment (fax, copy machines, printers, etc.).

  • Acquiring knowledge of unit academic culture and educational goals of discipline(s) served.

  • Analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organizational and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work with diverse populations of individuals, notably a large number of internationals. Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with students, staff, faculty, and all visitors to the office in a positive, helpful and welcoming manner.

  • Organizational skills, with ability to work independently under modest supervision, prioritize job functions to meet deadlines, ensure smooth workflow and handle multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding financial, payroll, and personnel information.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Occasional overtime and/or evenings/weekends may be required.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $53,800 - $91,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $25.77 - $43.58

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
