Job Overview

The Senior Vice President (SVP) of Finance for the physician enterprise is a key member of the senior leadership team, serving as the lead partner and liaison between the Tufts Medicine physician enterprise finance services team, operational leaders, and staff at the academic medical center (AMC), budget and productivity teams, and other external affiliations. The role provides strategic financial expertise and direction to key financial functions, manages the financial relationship between the AMC, Tufts Medicine, system hospitals, and other partners, and collaborates with Chairs, Administrators, and other system leaders on joint strategies for the combined enterprise. As the financial steward of the physician enterprise and system resources, this role oversees the physician enterprise's local finance operations, aligning them with the strategic business plan of Tufts Medicine and its affiliates. This position also requires extensive expertise in funds flow management, reimbursement models, and financial planning for physician services, and works closely with research teams to integrate clinical and research activities efficiently. The SVP will lead a team of staff to ensure long-term sustainability, growth, and effective financial oversight across the Physician Enterprise.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, or health care management.

2. Ten (10) years of progressive leadership experience and diverse healthcare finance experience.

3. Progressive experience in the role of trusted advisor and financial steward to leadership on all business and financial matters and will have a record of accomplishment in establishing effective and collaborative relationships with physicians and physician leaders.

4. Experience with Healthcare ERP and EMR systems (Epic and Workday).

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Master's degree in business administration, finance, or health care management.

2. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or CFA designation preferred.

3. Experience in an academic medical center and/or large multispecialty physician group practice.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

1. Serves as the senior finance leader for local physician enterprise operations, providing strategic financial advisory, analysis, and support across Tufts Medicine.

2. Builds trusted relationships with key stakeholders, including Chairs, administrators, and leadership teams across the health system.

3. Leads the development of local strategies that align with organizational goals, analyzing financial health and identifying areas for improvement.

4. Acts as a liaison between local entities and Tufts Medicine's finance functions, ensuring alignment in budgeting, reporting, operational performance, and funds flow between entities (hospitals, AMC research teams, and budget/productivity).

5. Oversees the development and reconciliation of the entity's operating budget, ensuring financial performance is monitored, variances addressed, and goals met.

6. Leads the review and renewal of external provider contracts, ensuring they remain competitive and aligned with system goals.

7. Represents the physician enterprise in system-level planning processes, driving capital allocation, business planning, and contract adjustments.

8. Maximizes revenue strategies, improve financial stability, and build cash reserves by managing resources effectively and reducing controllable expenses.

9. Ensures the implementation of revised contracting principles and oversee a contract tracking and renewal process.

10. Reviews and revises physician compensation models as needed to assure alignment with the overall physician enterprise and system strategy and to reduce inequitable variation among departments.

11. Leads process improvements for financial and operational efficiencies, ensuring reliable reporting and meeting performance goals.

12. Develops, manages, and grows a high-performing team, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and leadership.

13. Participates in strategic and long-range planning, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and capital priorities.

Physical Requirements:

1. Professional office environment with typical office requirements such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, etc.

2. This is largely a sedentary role, which involves sitting most of the time, but may involve movements such as walking, standing, reaching, ascending / descending stairs and operate office equipment.

3. Frequently required to speak, hear, communicate and exchange information.

4. Ability to see and read computer displays, read fine print, and/or normal type size print and distinguish letters, numbers and symbols.

5. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

6. Ability to work in confined or open environments.

7. Ability to work independently or in a team environment.

Skills & Abilities:

1. Deep understanding of complex funds flow models, reimbursement methodologies (e.g., capitation, fee-for-service, value-based care), and payer contracting within the healthcare or physician enterprise environment.

2. Proven experience working with research teams to integrate clinical and research financial operations, including managing funding sources, grants, and compliance with research-related financial policies.

3. Exceptional ability to collaborate with executive leadership, department heads, and cross-functional teams, and influence decision-making at the highest levels of the organization.

4. Maintains current knowledge and understanding of regulations, industry trends, current best practices, new developments, and applicable laws to ensure operational and financial effectiveness. Partner to ensure regulatory compliance for all areas of responsibility.

5. Demonstrated expertise in influencing and guiding senior leadership and key stakeholders to shape strategic decisions, drive organizational initiatives, and achieve business objectives.

6. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; be a good listener and able to present complex information to diverse audiences.

7. Proactive, results-oriented, and adept at driving change and continuous improvement.

8. High degree of integrity and professionalism in managing sensitive financial data and operations.
