Job Summary

The intern will provide assistance to the Research & Development Engineering team with various research and development projects in the area of Material Science and Mechanical Engineering. This position will support the development of new products and platform technologies that will have significant impact on the competitiveness of the Appliances division of Spectrum Brands and the success of new product initiatives with regards to cost, performance, & supply chain simplification.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Limited mechanical design work of consumer appliances division product markets utilizing CAD, (SolidWorks).
  • Generate engineering calculations, drawings, 3-D Models (using SolidWorks), analysis, prototyping, and specifications.
  • Product and Process development related to Mechanical systems, development of test methods, & product characterization.
  • Apply key NPD tools and analysis methodology throughout product verification and validation process. (FMEA, Weibull analysis, FEA, Rapid prototyping, CAD).
  • Develop new product concept and product specifications including performance capability, product reliability and product life requirements.
  • Responsibility to provide research, scientific support and direction specifically in the area of materials, coatings, and new / alternative manufacturing processes.
  • Technical support to development programs including data analysis & statistical interpretation.
  • Work closely with suppliers, vendors, and outside consulting firms with new product development projects.

Education and Experience Profile

Current enrollment in a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or Physics degree program required; with a sophomore or higher level standing

Required Skills

  • Must be able to analyze complex data, situations and develop range of solutions.
  • Must be a decisive, action-orientated individual.
  • Cross functional communication
  • Must have excellent written and presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively on teams.
  • Ability to perform basic office tasks (e.g. Word, Excel, CAD, etc.).
