The AJC is seeking an exceptional Senior Reporter/Columnist, Enterprise to lead enterprise coverage that explores the people, stories, and forces shaping Georgia's identity. This is a high-impact role for an accomplished journalist who brings depth, curiosity, and perspective to their work. The ideal candidate is both a rigorous reporter and a distinctive voice-someone who can identify the topics that matter most to our readers and produce original, resonant journalism with authority and insight.

In addition to long-form enterprise storytelling, this reporter will contribute occasional opinion columns grounded in reporting and experience, helping to illuminate complex issues with clarity and conviction. This dual focus makes the role uniquely positioned to influence civic discourse in Georgia and beyond.

Additionally, this role will establish this reporter as one of the AJC's trusted voices. A successful candidate in this role will use that voice to speak to our basic desires for safety, prosperity, community and justice.

Please note, this role is based in Atlanta, GA.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver ambitious enterprise journalism that deepens understanding of Georgia's people, culture, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Develop original story ideas that reflect strong news judgment and deep engagement with the community.
  • Write with voice, authority, and precision-producing clear, accurate, and compelling work that needs minimal editing.
  • Contribute occasional opinion columns that provide perspective, provoke thought, and reflect AJC's commitment to public service.
  • Build trust with audiences through transparency, fairness, and accountability in all reporting.
  • Serve as a newsroom leader in collaboration, mentoring, and innovation.
  • Work closely with editors to shape impactful digital and print presentations.
  • Stay current on records laws and reporting best practices, leveraging public data and documents in service of the story.
  • Act with independence, integrity, and initiative in daily work and long-term projects.


Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree and at least 8+ years of professional journalism experience, or Master's degree with 6+ years, or PhD with 3+ years, or at least 12 years of relevant experience without a degree.
  • At least 7+ years of professional journalism experience; opinion writing experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to break exclusive stories and pursue investigative angles.
  • Proven experience with public records research and data reporting.
  • Deep understanding of the ethical and legal standards guiding journalism today.
  • Clear commitment to inclusive sourcing and equity in storytelling.
  • A seasoned journalist with a track record of producing high-caliber enterprise work, ideally with experience writing for a regional or national audience.
  • A skilled storyteller and analytical thinker, capable of navigating complex subjects and making them accessible and meaningful.
  • A confident writer with a distinctive voice and the discipline to consistently meet deadlines.
  • A self-starter who thrives in a collaborative, fast-moving newsroom and takes ownership of their beat.
  • A curious and empathetic listener who engages a broad range of sources and communities in their work.
  • A believer in journalism's power to inform, challenge, and connect.

Compensation:

Compensation includes a base salary of $0.00 - $0.00. The base salary may vary within the anticipated base pay range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate's knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include an incentive program.

Benefits:

The Company offers eligible employees the flexibility to take as much vacation with pay as they deem consistent with their duties, the company's needs, and its obligations; seven paid holidays throughout the calendar year; and up to 160 hours of paid wellness annually for their own wellness or that of family members. Employees are also eligible for additional paid time off in the form of bereavement leave, time off to vote, jury duty leave, volunteer time off, military leave, and parental leave.
