Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $58,000 - $68,000.

Job Closing Date

Remote/Hybrid eligibility: Hybrid schedule 3 days in the office, with the expectation of 5 days in the office starting August 1st, 2025.

About the Job

Involves providing individualized services to students who are underrepresented, low income, first-generation college students, and/or otherwise at a higher risk of experiencing academic difficulty, which contributes to student success. Services may include academic needs assessment, developing individual study plans, recognizing and addressing academic and non-academic barriers to academic success, and counseling on other aspects that may affect student retention and academic success. Includes specializations in particular underrepresented groups, particular academic skills (e.g., research skills, preparation for graduate programs), or success in particular academic programs. Provides the full range of assessment, counseling, and advice to targeted students, and makes referrals to campus and community resources. Works independently, receiving guidance on complicated problems/situations. Awareness of current trends in Higher Education pertaining to first-generation low-income college students.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides multicultural academic coaching across disciplines and colleges/schools to "Most in Need" student populations (e.g., low-income, first generation college, underrepresented populations, etc.) and works with academic departments, faculty, and department management to help resolve specific student academic issues. Develops and implements program and services designed to support retention and transition for participants. In addition, develops and fosters campus and off-campus partnerships that support student non-academic needs that contribute to student retention, i.e., Counseling and Psychological support, food security, financial aid, housing, child-care, career planning, employment opportunities, etc.
  • Responsible for program budget management and resource allocation. Responsible for collecting, reporting, and assessing data associated with student retention and developing programs that address student success.
  • Conducts comprehensive assessments of students' issues and needs and provides solutions and alternatives to address problem areas. Refers students to appropriate campus and off-campus resources. Assists students with the academic research process, including developing a question and hypothesis, selecting appropriate quantitative or qualitative research methods, evaluating evidence, and writing reports. Keeps abreast of student trends and assessments in higher education through UCwide networks and off-campus partnerships.
  • Plans, implements, and instructs academic and personal development course for first-year students (Undergraduate Studies 10).
  • Develops and plans program content, identifies student learning outcomes, and manages relevant program data for assessment.
  • In collaboration with the Center for Career and Professional Development, develop and implement strategies that focus on career development and/or professional and graduate school opportunities.
  • Recruit, select, train, and supervise team of student paraprofessionals: 3 Student Coordinators.
  • Designs and implements an informative outreach campaign in partnership with University Marketing, the Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, California Community Colleges, and County Social Services.
Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Advanced degree, Master's in related area/field (Counseling, Educational, Leadership, Student Affairs, or Higher, Adult and Lifelong Learning). (Preferred)

AND

  • 3 years of increasingly responsible work in a related field.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

  • Knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human development, student, and career development. In addition, knowledge as it pertains to low-income, first generation college, underrepresented populations.
  • Knowledge of University, college, and major requirements, policies, and procedures, including policies pertaining to handling student records and confidential documents.
  • Knowledge and familiarity of student success and persistence among low-income, first generation college, underrepresented populations.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with current trends in higher education and their applicability to the identified student population.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with current and/or developing trends in state or national policies related to low-income, first generation college, underrepresented populations.
  • Proficiency in other language(s) other than English. (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of state initiatives that pertain to low-income, first generation college, underrepresented populations.
  • Possess knowledge of the educational migration story of first-generation low-income students.
  • Knowledge of current state and federal policies or laws as they pertain to low-income, first generation college, underrepresented populations.
