GENERAL SUMMARY: A Custodian performs duties and assignments in support of town and maintenance operations. Although assigned to a specific building for accountability and administrative purposes, the incumbent fills in for vacancies or custodians on leave in any building. * One (1) shift working four (4) consecutive ten (10) hour days; Friday, Saturday, Sunday; 7:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Monday; 1:00 p.m. - 11:30 p.m. (40 hours per week). * Successful candidates will be subject to pre-employment physical and drug screening. CORI background check and SAFIS fingerprinting is required. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: * Keep building and premises, including sidewalks, neat and clean at all times. Shovel, plow and/or sand walks and steps as needed. * Check daily to insure all exit doors are opened at the start of the day. * Remove all waste and debris. * Mop work spaces (wet mop as needed) and dust fixtures. Vacuum carpeted areas, daily. * Clean corridors and stairs after work daily and during the day, when conditions require it. * Scrub, hose down, and disinfect toilet and floors daily and clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily. Check towel, tissue and soap dispensers and refill as necessary. * Wash all windows per cleaning schedule. * Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition, including halls and meeting spaces to ensure they are in a good state of preservation. * Replace light bulbs as needed. * Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste. * Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Building Manager, Director of Public Facilities or designee. * Remain on Town premises during working hours, and during non-working hours during authorized use of the building when assigned as required by Director of Public Facilities or designee. * Report all repairs such as broken windows, as well as vandalism damage to Department of Public Facilities * Assume responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each day and for determining, upon leaving, that all doors and windows are secured and that the alarm system is in working order. * Keep inventory of supplies and equipment and requisition needed replacements in a timely manner. * Check fire extinguishers for charge level and notify the Department of Public Facilities if there is a problem. * Miscellaneous duties such as, setting up tables and chairs for special events, providing direction and answering basic questions regarding events for patrons. * Perform minor maintenance and assist maintenance staff as needed. * Clean and maintain material and equipment. * Perform other similar duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Custodians. * Performs snow removal operation as set forth by the Department of Public Facilities. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None. MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed in this job description. Candidate must have a valid driver's license. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal record check (CORI), and a pre-placement medical exam with drug screening. ADVANCED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: N/A QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: * Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in modern cleaning methods including basic methods for cleaning carpets, floors, restrooms, walls, furniture and fixtures. * Working knowledge of cleaning chemicals, supplies, and equipment and safety practices used in custodial work. * Good oral and written communication skills. Ability to: * Maintain an assigned work plant, group of buildings or office space in a clean, orderly and secure manner during an assigned shift. * Learn custodial procedures, methods and schedules. * Use common cleaning equipment and materials in a safe and efficient manner. * Drive town vehicle to make deliveries. * Work cooperatively with others. * Meet schedules and timelines. * Understand and follow oral and written directions. * Exercise sound judgment. * Work well under pressure. * Communicate and work well with others. * Be reliable and organized. * Use computer to request supplies and services. * Work effectively in a fast-paced environment. * WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: * * The physical and environmental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. * Work is performed both inside and outside and the employee may be subject to loud noise, exposure to extremes in temperature, inclement weather, dust, odors, cleaning chemicals and related fumes, etc. Employee is subject to one or more hazards such as those associated with working power equipment, climbing ladders and working from scaffolding and aerial lifts. * Work is mutually mental and physical. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is required to bend at the waist, push, pull, move, lift and carry up to 75 pounds, twist/turn, climb ladders, shovel snow, seek to assure proper and complete cleaning, and use dexterity of hands and fingers to operate power cleaning equipment. * The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to do this job.
