OVERVIEW
Merrick & Company is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the mechanical design and project engineering of projects as part of a multi-disciplinary team. This is a contract position, and the Mechanical Engineer will be based at a client industrial facility in Chalmette, LA, not at a Merrick office. Qualified candidates will have a well-defined understanding of design and construction document processes, and adaptability for short term and long-term projects in an environment that requires a blend of creativity and high technical skills. Successful candidates will be self-starting, motivated, innovative, articulate, self-disciplined, and confident in a demanding, exciting, and fast-paced environment. This engineer will be responsible for all phases of mechanical design and project engineering ranging from conceptual engineering through detailed design and construction administration.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- This engineer is to be dedicated to supporting the development and project engineering of utility systems. The scope of utility systems includes, but is not limited to, the following asset types:
- Steam Generators (Boilers, Heat Recovery Steam Generators)
- Power Generators (Steam Turbines, Gas Turbines, Reciprocal Combustion Engines)
- Water Treatment Systems (Clarification, Filtration, Water Softening, Reverse Osmosis, Deaeration)
- Water Distribution, Steam Distribution, Air Distribution, Condensate Collection, Wastewater Collection
- Chemical Injection Systems
- Air Compressors and Gas Compressors
- Pumps
- Heat Exchangers
- Instrumentation and Controls
- Complete detailed engineering calculations to size equipment and pipe systems, specifications, technical reports as required, vendor coordination, and work with designers to produce detailed 3D CAD models and construction drawings.
- Perform site inspection, construction support, testing, and commissioning of equipment and facilities as required.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of applicable codes and standards for the design and construction of industrial processes, systems and facilities.
- Develop and maintain skills in required software packages including AutoCAD and Plant 3D.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering or related field from an ABET Accredited Institution required.
- Have core competencies in fluid dynamics, heat and mass transport, thermodynamics, and associated skills.
- A minimum of four (4) years related experience.
- Experience in aspects of mechanical project design including planning, calculations, equipment selection, schematic design, production of construction documents (drawings and specifications), and construction administration is a strong asset.
- Experience in Industrial design and construction knowledge.
- Proficient in report writing including basis of design reports, specifications, field reports, etc.
- Ability to develop general arrangements, plan/elevation schematics, and P&IDs in AutoCAD.
- Local candidate with commutable distance to Chalmette, Louisiana.
- Client projects for this position require U.S. Citizenship.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with utility systems (steam, power, water, air, piping)
- Familiarity with the operating environment and hands-on field experience
- Project engineering experience.
- Licensure as a Professional Engineer preferred. If the candidate is not currently licensed, they must demonstrate a plan and ability to obtain licensure within two years of joining Merrick.
- Experience with AutoCAD and other calculation software (CAESAR II, AFT Fathom, Trane Trace, etc.)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- The job requires the ability to work at an industrial and construction site for the intent of performing inspections and observations that may be physically demanding. These inspections and observations may be made at heights, in confined spaces, and may require the use of a respirator to perform the inspections.
