Job Description

Vertex is seeking a highly motivated scientist to join the Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) group in San Diego. As part of the tissue and cell characterization function you will help evaluate and validate novel targets, characterize human donor tissues, uncover causal biology of new diseases, and drive the development of human disease-relevant models of serious genetic diseases.

The ideal candidate will combine extensive hands-on experience with histology techniques and managing histology laboratory workflows with willingness to work hard and tenacity to solve problems and execute goals to help develop transformative medicines for people with serious diseases and significant unmet need.

This is a full time, onsite position in San Diego.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Management and maintenance of manual and automated histology lab equipment
  • Tissue grossing, processing, and embedding
  • Microtomy, cryosectioning - at volume (100+ samples/week)
  • Histological staining: H&E and special stains
  • IHC/ISH staining - manual and automated (Ventana, Leica Bond)
  • Automated slide scanning (brightfield, fluorescence)
  • Multiple imaging modalities including brightfield, fluorescence, SEM, and TEM
  • Image Analysis (HALO, Visiopharm, custom scripting)
  • Image data management
  • Coordination and collaboration with other departments to facilitate lab functions, and develop efficient, safe, and robust histology lab workflow
  • Exceptional organization skills and attention to detail for accurate sample processing and tracking
  • Reliability and flexibility to work as needed for processing donor tissues outside of normal working hours including weekends and holidays
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, maintain timelines and adaptability to evolving priorities
  • Tenacious problem solver, with initiative and drive to find resources and solutions

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in Biology, or related disciplines and 0-3+ years of relevant post-doctoral employment experience,
  • Masters Degree (or equivalent degree) in Biology, or related disciplines and 3+ years of relevant employment experience, or
  • Bachelors Degree (or equivalent degree) in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or related disciplines and 6+ years of relevant employment experience

Pay Range:

$118,500 - $177,800

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
