Overview

Under the general supervision of the Dean, the Integrated Science Center Lab Technician supports the science laboratories located in the Integrated Science Center (ISC) and at other sites as needed. The position collaborates with General Education, Health Science and other academic instructors to ensure lab environments are maintained and safe for student learning, to include proper setup, maintenance, troubleshooting and use of the lab instruments and equipment.

This position will be open until filled, with a first review date of June 23, 2025. After this date, the recruitment may close without further notice. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.



Responsibilities

Instructional Support

    Partner with faculty to develop laboratory workshops, demonstrations and exercises using available technologies within the ISC on the Beloit-Janesville Campus. Support lab courses offered at the Monroe Campus or other outreach sites as assigned by the Dean.
  1. Assist in laboratory setup to include mixing and dispensing solutions, creating helpful signs and handouts, and checking instruments and equipment. Maintain microbial cultures for biological lab activities.
  2. Create and maintain records of different lab setups and standard operating procedures for lab instruments and equipment as needed.
  3. Assist faculty in researching and piloting new instrumentation and equipment.
  4. Assist faculty with grant writing and data analysis; log grant activities for grant tracking and compliance.
  5. Assist with the demonstration of the proper use of lab equipment and instrumentation.

Lab Maintenance

  1. Maintain laboratory equipment to include current calibration on all lab equipment.
  2. Maintain the working condition of the lab and equipment by performing minor adjustments or requesting Facilities Services maintenance or replacement.
  3. Coordinate the use of the lab space and oversee student lab workers.
  4. Issue equipment and supplies to instructors and monitor when returned.
  5. Work as part of a team to maintain an open and safe lab environment. Model safe behaviors, direct students in emergency procedures, and intervene when unsafe behaviors are observed.
  6. Dispose of used materials and specimens per chemical and biological safety standards and maintain a neat, organized space.
  7. Make purchase order requests and track items through receipt and payment. Develop and maintain spreadsheets to monitor expenditures against the amounts allocated for each of the budgets used in each discipline area of the lab.
  8. Manage instrument and equipment maintenance schedules to include preventive maintenance; track repair costs.
  9. Maintain records and documentation on supplies, instruments, and equipment. Note quantities of all supplies, where they are located and how to obtain them. Order supplies and materials as needed.
  10. Perform general clerical duties related to the maintenance and efficiency of the lab areas.


Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present information, explain procedures and respond to questions.
  2. Knowledge of the proper use and maintenance of lab instrumentation, lab equipment and AV equipment.
  3. Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  4. Proficiency with technologies associated with life science and physical science lab spaces.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse individuals.
  6. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently in an environment with frequent interruptions.

Education & Experience:

  1. Bachelor's degree in a natural science discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Two (2) years of related work experience.
