The Sr. Packaging Engineer at our West Union, SC manufacturing facility is responsible for leading packaging innovation and sustainability projects, improving the customer packaging experience. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and produce packaging solutions for Itron's products that ensure safe, compliant, cost-effective storage and transportation within a continuous improvement environment.

This role requires both strategic thinking and tactical execution. The individual should be comfortable with ambiguity, working with cross-functional teams globally, working independently, influencing packaging strategies, mobilizing change, and driving projects to completion.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Create primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging for Itron products to enable safe and cost-effective transportation.
  • Develop packaging and packing processes to protect products from the outside environment during storage and transport.
  • Ensure packaging is designed and developed to maximize the use of space, with consideration for standardization.
  • Early engagement in product lifecycle, and collaboration with other teams (including global suppliers, engineering, product management, operations, and sourcing) to develop the appropriate packaging.
  • Conduct value engineering studies toreassess existing packaging solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with Itron's sustainability and environmental policies, along with regulatory controls, statutory reporting, recycling, and end-of-life disposal.
  • Where applicable, oversee independent external testing and certification to industry-accepted packaging standards.
  • Work with suppliers and manufacturers tosource and supply packaging materials.
  • Use CAD software todesign and model secure and space-optimized packaging, including internal partitions,void fillers,or other features.
  • Develop a global standard for branding and graphic design of packaging and labelling.
  • Implement thepackaging and packing solutionsinto the company's production andfulfilment processes.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • A bachelor's degree in packing science or engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years post-qualification experience in design, development, testing, and deployment of sustainable packaging for small and mid-size industrial products, especially related to shock, vibration, and environmental protection for electronic products.
  • Ability to document designs, create 2D/3D CAD models and provide detailed print drawings to vendors.
  • Understanding of regulatory packaging requirements (e.g. ISO 18601) for the US, EU, and other countries.
  • Knowledge of supply chain logistics, logistics infrastructure, and multi-modal transportation
  • Experience in materials technology, packaging optimization, consolidation, and standardization.
  • Graphic Design & branding.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) or Certified Packaging Laboratory Professional (CPLP)

Location and Travel:

  • Core site - West Union, South Carolina
  • Willing to travel domestically and internationally up to 10% of the time.
